Year 9 Outdoor Ed

Alpine Camp

Recently, students of the Year 9 Outdoor Education class participated in a three day camp. The purpose of the experience is to expose students to recreational activities conducted in Alpine environments, such as mountain biking and cross country skiing.  Students were also experiencing the natural alpine environment in the winter season, so they had been learning, planning and preparing for the climate they would be exposed to and the challenges and risks that it may present.

The students had an action packed, exhausting experience on their trip. Mr Sirett and Miss Rees thank trainee Molly Bohm for attending the camp and making it possible!

Camp reflection

When we arrived at Bright on the first day we went for a three hour mountain bike ride. The mountain biking terrain park was filled with a plethora of challenges and some students found that out the hard way, with many entertaining stacks!  After that we went to the supermarket to buy our food for the three days, then we went to the caravan park we were staying at. After settling in, we walked around the corner to get our skis and boots for the next day.

The next morning after breakfast we got dressed and ready to go skiing and we hopped on the bus. It took us an hour to get to Cresta Valley, Mt. Buffalo. where we were skiing for the day.  When we first arrived we split into two groups to practice skills and things we needed to know, and then went for a long ski-trail explore.

We learnt that just because this environment is in the snow (cold), that doesn’t mean you’re not going to get sun-burnt or that it's not going to be hot.  We also learnt the skills of skiing such as how to stop when skiing down a slope!
