VCAL - FAIRY GARDEN

Wandin North Primary School

Fairy Garden

In April our VCAL Intermediate class started planning a 'Fairy Garden' for Wandin North Primary School.

As we had to raise money for the fairy garden, we held two sausage sizzles, sold cans of soft drink, fairy floss and fairy bread.

Once we had raised enough money, our planning went into full swing. We were working as a team to design the garden and source resources for it.

We went to visit the primary school to measure up the area and see if our plans would work. After this visit, we had to slightly adjust our plans.

Back in class, we researched Bunnings and other websites to find the materials for the garden. Once we had an idea from the Bunnings website of what we were going to buy, we went to Bunnings in Lilydale to have a look at the stock.

One week before we were due to build the garden, we went back to Bunnings to purchase the equipment we needed.

On the day of the build, we went to Wandin North Primary and began working on the garden. We hit a few obstacles early on day one, so we had to change our plans a bit, as the size and landscape of the area caused a few issues.

On the first day of construction, we had to get rid of the old plants, dig large holes for stumps for the seat, move a cement barrel and begin building the retaining wall.

On day two of the garden construction, we finalised the retaining walls and built the seat, planted all of the plants, built a garden path with pavers and stones and also added pavers and stones to the seating area, and mulched the area. The final touches were putting fairy ornaments into the garden for the primary school kids to enjoy.

The build of the 'Fairy Garden' at Wandin North Primary school was a great success. The final product looked amazing and the students at the primary school were very grateful. They even came and said thank you to us before we left on the last day.

This was a fantastic experience and it was great to see all of our hard work in this class pay off.
