As a celebration of our study of Picnic at Hanging Rock by Melbourne writer Joan Lindsay, and after exchanging Valentine’s day cards, students (and teacher) changed their personas to Victorian era ladies and lads, parasols included.
Cake, tea, jellies, and fruit were consumed befitting the era.
“In addition, to the chicken pie, angel cake, jellies and tepid bananas inseparable from an Australian picnic, cook ad provided a handsome iced cake in the shape of a heart.................” Under our feet ‘a battalion of sugar ants’ carried away “heaven-sent crumbs’ and other ‘edible loot’ but we did not see ‘torpid snakes coiled in secret holes awaiting the twilight hour....”
Saint Valentine would definitely approve.
