Rubbish Rebel Waste

Rubbish Rebels Champions!

Congratulations to FL as our first Rubbish Rebel champions, and to 1B who won the second week. It is wonderful seeing the reduction in our waste across the whole school.Remember – no rubbish in lunchboxes every day. Rubbish must be taken home in the students’ lunch boxes if it is brought to school. As part of our commitment to becoming a 5-star sustainable school our waste is weighed and tallied each collection, this means we are actively trying to reduce external rubbish into our school bins.

I Sea I Care Marine Ambassadors

Huge congratulations to Hayley R, Seth R, Cody P, Lily V, Aidan P and Chloe J on becoming the Somerville PS marine ambassadors. This was a very sought-after program for the Grade 5/6 students, there were only 6 positions and over 37 speeches were made. I want to congratulate all of the students who applied for this program, it was incredibly tough choosing only 6 and the calibre of leaders we have at SPS is awesome! The speeches reflected great pride for our environment and a commitment to protecting it. Remember, even without a spot in this program everyone has the opportunity to shape our environment for the better – what can you do today to improve the outcomes for tomorrow?

Enviro Stars

I have been so impressed with the Enviro Stars around SPS. An Enviro Star is someone looking out for the environment and doing their best to clean it up and protect it. Well done to Caroline for being our Waste Free Warrior this week – pictured here with a recycled newspaper pencil and to Max for his zero waste lunchbox. Zara for bringing in her batteries from home so we can recycle them. Keep up the great work!

 THANK YOU – Hastings Bunnings!

On Friday the 4th of March SPS is getting involved in Clean Up Australia Day for Schools. During the day students in Grade 4 will be walking down to Barber Reserve to collect rubbish with a team of volunteers from Bunnings Hastings. We will bring this rubbish back to SPS to sort, making sure we recycle or redcycle any items we can.

Hastings Bunnings kindly donated buckets, gloves, and bags for us to use to help clean up our community and we are so grateful! Miss Dunstan was thrilled to receive this trolley full of items. Thanks Bunnings Hastings!!
