Maths subject choices for Year 10 in 2022

By now, parents and caregivers of Year 9 students will have received an email about choosing a maths subject for Year 10.

To help prepare our students for the various maths options in Year 11, we offer two choices for mathematics in Year 10:

  • Year 10 General Mathematics
  • Year 10 Advanced Mathematics

General Mathematics is the stream chosen by the majority of students who are looking to do a core ATAR maths course whereas Advanced Mathematics is for the student looking to move into a University course where a higher level of mathematics is considered a pre-requisite.

It is important that, before a choice is made, students look at their pathway and the requirements for the course they might want to do at university, as well as their own ability in mathematics. It is recommended that a student be achieving at an A or B level in Year 9 maths to best enable them to meet the demands of the Advanced Mathematics course.

Students are encouraged to see their teacher, the Careers Counsellor (Mrs Ambrose) or me if they are not sure which course is most appropriate for their ability and their future pathway.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about these Year 10 courses. The deadline for the decision about which Mathematics course to take is Monday 1st November (Week 5). In the instance of a form not being received for a student by the due date, a decision will be made based on current Year 9 results in Mathematics. There will be opportunities at the end of each term next year to reassess and move to a different course.
