LEADERSHIP CAMP

Written by Samantha Cox (Year 11)

This week our new Student Councillors headed to Perth to participate in a Leadership and Team-Building Camp,  in conjunction with the Narrogin Ag College.

On our way up we stopped in Pinjarra to meet with local Labour Member, Mrs Robyn Clarke. Mrs Clarke gave us a number of great ideas about how to improve the running of the student council, along with stories of her past experiences that gave us a new perspective on the way we handle matters regarding the student council.

Next we headed to Kinetica, which is a circus school, where we got to know one another better and grew stronger as a team. We also did some team building acrobatic exercises with the Narrogin students.

On the way back to our accommodation at Karrinyup Waters Resort, we stopped to grab groceries for the next couple of days. This was a good exercise to build valuable life skills surrounding budgeting and calculating the amount of food required for our entire group. Throughout the following days, various students took turns cooking the meals allowing our skills to be further developed.

Later that evening we begin to plan and organise for the last term and following year, including various events and fundraising.

On Tuesday morning we continued with some more planning, including financial planning with Mrs Hickman, before joining the Narrogin Ag students to discuss public speaking, meetings and leadership skills with Mr Watt.

In the afternoon we participated in a Charity Bike Building Challenge with Total Team Building and the Heart Kids Foundation. For this task, we were put in random groups with the Narrogin Ag students and had to complete a number of challenges which involved working together as a collective team before building a bike which were later presented to the Heart Kids Foundation kids, who were overjoyed. After dinner we continued with further planning.

On Wednesday morning after packing and cleaning up, students were allocated with upcoming events for them to begin to plan and organise the details. Then we drove back to Harvey via Cottesloe and Mandurah with students completing more planning along the way.

Throughout the trip students also enjoyed various trips to the pool and heated pool.

Overall, the camp has been hugely successful for planning, gaining new skills and developing a stronger leadership council. We have also been able to discuss ideas with the Narrogin Ag students which has allowed us to improve our ideas and form connections between councils, which will aid us in further endeavours.

A huge thank you to Ms Stringer and Mr Murnane for organising the camp and accompanying us and Mr Watt and Mrs Hickman for coming up to talk to us.
