Junior Class - Mrs Creek

The first week back is always filled with excitement.

In Term 4, the whole class is practising reading and writing high frequency words.  We are also making sure that we know our grammar foci words such as noun, verb, adjective and conjunctions.  Our shared story this week is titled, ‘Captain Crabclaw’s Crew’ by Frances Watte.  Being able to predict elements within the story has been our key focus.  To predict is to say what you think might happen.  All readers need to make predictions.  If a story is following a predictable sequence, then we might accurately predict what will happen on the next page.  Some of our predictions have been accurate, and some not.

In Mathematics, we are learning to become mathematicians.  We need to be able to trust my count and count on from this number.  So if I know I have 5 and I want to add 4 to it, I don’t have to go back and start counting again to find the total.  I count on from 5...6, 7, 8, 9.  To be a mathematician, I have to use my knowledge of the odds and even pattern to work out if other numbers are also odd or even.

Middle Class - Miss Williams

This week it has been lovely to have two-thirds of our class back at school.  We have had the Year 2s at school full time and some Year 3s whose parents are back at work.  This week we have been managing the best way to work with having some at school and some at home and the Year 3s at school have been doing a fantastic job in being flexible with how and when we approach their work to complete.

In reading we have been focusing on the book “Giraffes Can’t Dance”.  In class we have been looking at how the different characters might feel differently about the same situation, looking at how their feelings might change throughout the book and retelling the story from a different character in the book and their perspective.  Those children who have been at school, joined in the reading of the book as well as reading the book in the form of a song, to which we added some dance moves and clapping.

In maths the Year 2s have been working on fractions and finding halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections.  The Year 3s have been working on place value in partitioning 4-digit numbers and representing 4-digit numbers in standard and non-standard form.

In writing we have been working on retelling an event from the holidays through using the story grammar marker.  We started off the week with Miss Williams modelling how to use the story grammar marker to retell the event of her dog Daisy giving birth to four puppies and how she only got about 2 hours sleep in 36 hours because of it!
