Aspire Celebrate Reflect

Dear Parents,

With only two weeks of Term 2 left I reflect on the challenges we each face in life. A challenge one person feels is insurmountable, might be a challenge that another person gains enjoyment from. It explains why we shouldn't compare or judge another person's life journey.

A man who faced many challenges and was a great teacher, because of his actions and attitude, was Pierre Gorman. He is someone I have the utmost respect and admiration for.

A few years ago I wrote about Pierre who was born profoundly deaf, yet never complained or felt sorry for himself.

Pierre was a friend of my father's, and attended a normal high school (rather than an institute for the deaf, which was the norm in those days) and he faced many challenges.

After spending a full day at school, Pierre would return home and ask his parents to explain his lessons. Pierre later completed Year 12, studied Agricultural Science at Melbourne University, went to university in France and was the first deaf person to gain a PhD from Cambridge University.

It was his life-long quest to improve the lot of the hearing impaired and that's what he will be remembered for. Essentially Pierre took an unfortunate circumstance and accepted it as a challenge to better his life and the life of thousands of people. That’s inspirational!

Thank you and Be Kind Always,
