Lachlan King - State Tennis Champion!

I was hoping to share the exciting news that BPS has a State Tennis Champion in our midst at an assembly with our community but given the current round of remote learning I thought it best to share the fantastic news in our newsletter.

Lachlan King is in grade 6 and attended district Tennis with a number of our students in term 1. The top 2 boys and girls from that event progressed to division and the whole process begins again. Lachlan progressed through regional and eventually made his way to Boroondara tennis centre for the state finale.

In Lachlan’s words:

On Monday 24th May I went to Boroondara tennis centre to play in the state tennis championships.

I got there and I had a warm up with my dad but I was very nervous. The draw was split into 2 groups. I started my first match at 10am and won the next 3 matches 6-0 but as the time went on the matches got tighter. After winning my group I went on to the semi-finals to play the number 1 seeded player from Geelong. I was quite nervous also because he is one of my best friends! I got on the court and had a great start by breaking his serve in the first game. Then he turned his game over and won the next 3 games. I was trying to hold my frustration inside me. I got the match back into my hands and from 1-3 down I won the next 5 games to win my way into the state final!

I got off the court and watched the other semi-final. I was thinking about my tactics for both players.

I got on the court and had a great start going up 2-0. My opponent turned his game on and got it back to 2-2. I then focused very hard on my tactics and won the next 4 games to win the state championship. It was a great day for me and a really good learning experience.”

What a great insight from Lachlan on how to focus on his tactics and to dig deep towards achieving his goal.

Lachlan as state champion would normally now progress as a member of Team Vic to compete at a national level but with the current situation this may not be possible. Regardless of this his accomplishment cannot be underestimated or the pride that we share with Lachlan at this time.

District Cross Country

On Wednesday 26th May we took a team of 72 students from grades 4, 5 and 6 to District Cross Country at Dendy Park. The students had been selected based on their strong performances at House Cross Country where they had to come in the top 12 of their races of approx. 50 students to advance to this stage. There were some amazing performers in the grade 3 race but this is just for fun and these students do not compete against other schools until they are in grade 4.

The students performed admirably, were on task and supportive of each other all day and were guided and encouraged by our Cross Country Captains, Alice Weddell and Lachlan King.

We finished the day in third place out of 8 schools behind Black Rock and Beaumaris North and the top 10 finishers again advance to test their endurance against the best runners in the Division.

Many thanks to Ms. Runciman, Ms. Langford Jones, Mrs. Travis, Sandra Fernandez, Pip Scarff and Fiona Loorham for their help on the day.

Hopefully this event will proceed on the 15th June when we are back at school.

The students who are competing:

BAILEY B, ASTRID B, MASON C, HAMISH D, HUGO J, LACHLAN K, MATEO N, DUKE P, FELICITY S, RILEY S, ALICE W.

Good luck!
