Sports Update

Recently we have had a number of teams go through to State, which speaks volumes of the sports program at Viewbank.

But first in our division competition, our senior teams played on the 11th of May.

Our boys football, girls netball and soccer teams all won through to the next round, to be played either later this term or next next term.  We wish them all the best!

On Monday the 16th May, our senior boys tennis team went through to State.

Despite playing a player down and then having another player pull an abdominal through their first game (thus further reducing our team to only 3 players), we fought valiantly. Sadly though, the day was lost, but to the boys credit we only lost each of our rounds by 1 game - again, despite playing 2 players down by the end of it!

Congratulations go out to Coach Amy McConnell, and players Josh Coley, Nick Jovanovski, Chris Thorp and Jai Vidinopoulos.  Excellent work!  There are a couple of photos below.

Congratulations also to Eva Wilson who is off the the VIS Athlete Development Program in Hammer throw! We have been following Eva’s progress for the year, and we are keen to see how she progresses!

Now, shocking as it may seem, your staff at Viewbank College are more than teachers, more than support staff, more than tutors.

So lets take a look and see what they do in their lives outside of school, starting with our fearless leader, Sharon Grimes.

Playing Netball since age 10 to aged 48 when an ACL injury ended her career, Mrs. Grimes has also indicated she loves her footy and would have played if women’s footy was a thing when she was younger, not too long ago.  But in Netball, Mrs. Grimes has played at women’s A grade level for many years in her favourite position - Goal Defence.

There was no comment on if she has ever played against potentially Netball’s biggest star, Sharon Strzlecki.

Mrs. Grimes has now gone on to coach at Macleod Netball Club, and also coach as a rep level coach with Banyule for many years.  Her favourite coaching moment is winning in tournaments on a Sunday in 5 degree weather with the wind driving the rain horizontally across the court - those wins mean the most, as that’s when it really counts.

Mrs. Grimes stresses that Netball is not a soft sport - it’s very fierce and fast, and you can always count on other players to be ‘here if you need’. There’s something we can all take from that in life.

With a favourite sporting moment being Cathy Freeman winning the 400 at Sydney despite all the pressure, Mrs. Grimes is inspired by athletes and anyone competing in sport who keep their heads up and give it their all, whatever the score.

In her words - ‘NEVER GIVE UP! Give it your best.'

Won a state title?  Even competed in something above and beyond normal club competitions? WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT!  Email your child’s results (and photos!) through to either Mr. Gazzola or Mr. Purcell and we will get them in the newsletter.  Achievements should be shared!
