Book spotlights

Our rundown of new and popular books from the VBC library this month.

Aurora Rising

Melbourne-based authors Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff continue their winning partnership with this action-filled, fun, sci-fi space opera.  Set in 2380, a group of newly graduated space cadets are from cryo-sleep by Aurora, in a battle to save the galaxy.

The first two books have been in high demand this year (they can also be found on the e-platform) – we are eagerly waiting the final part of the trilogy.

Robin Hood: Hacking, Heists & Flaming Arrows

Cherub author Robert Muchamore returns with this new action-adventure series. This modern version of the Robin Hood story features an interesting plot and some great characters.

Twisted Tales

Some of our recent new buys are from the Disney Twisted Tales series – much requested by Year 7s this year, these retellings of the Disney animations put a new twist on the classic tales.

A Song of Achilles

We were mystified by the recent popularity of some older favourites in the library – until we discovered #booktok recommendations – as well as being very entertaining, these videos have sent some great books, like this retelling of Homer’s Iliad, back up the bestseller lists.

Howl’s Moving Castle

Published in 1986 this magical Fantasy novel is a much loved modern classic. It was adapted into a Japanese animated movie in 2004, and is a great novel for manga fans to try. We have both the book and manga series – and this one is also available on the e-platform.

The Gaps

Our YA mysteries are very popular, so we are always keen to add to this collection. New this year is The Gaps, the story of the disappearance of a Year 10 student which focuses on the friendships and emotions of her classmates.
