Feast of the Most Sacred Heart and St Kevin's Day

Today we celebrated the feasts of the Most Sacred Heart and St. Kevin.

We learnt a lot of interesting information about how Jesus and St. Kevin showed the value of love with every action. We made love hearts to show the love Jesus has for us.

St. Kevin was a patient man. He loved nature and peace and quiet.    Abby RA

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus uses parables when talking to the people. The fourth chapter of Mark’s Gospel focuses entirely on parables. Parables are stories about things on earth that tell us something about the things of Heaven. They help us understand what Jesus wants us to know. The parables we hear now are about something very tiny - seeds.

Seed grows of Itself, Jesus is pointing out that the growth of the Kingdom of God is a hidden reality that operates under God’s power rather than through human work and effort. In the second part of the Gospel, the parable of the Mustard Seed, Jesus is offering the crowds words of encouragement. What at first might seem small and insignificant will, under God’s power, become “the largest of plants.”

Most seeds are small, but the mustard seed is super small; it is about the size of a teeny dot on a sheet of paper. What Jesus is saying is that although seeds are small, they can grow into something big and important. In the first parable, the seeds planted grew into a healthy crop of grain, but it took many days and nights. In the second parable, the mustard seed grew into a tree. But this, too, took time. When things take a long time to happen, we have to be patient. We have to have faith. God wants us to know that if we live as Jesus asks us to, we can look forward to happiness with God in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Reflection

In the parables, or simple stories that Jesus told, he used everyday objects such as salt, light, coins, yeast, and even a father and his sons to teach moral lessons. Jesus wanted people to relate to the stories he told, and to understand his teachings about the ways in which children of God are called to live. Children love to hear good stories, especially those they can relate to because the situations, settings, characters, or objects are familiar to them.

Activity that you can do with your FamilyPlace a small, empty bowl and a container of various kinds of seeds on your family prayer table or kitchen table. Remind your family that every person can plant seeds of goodness, kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity, thankfulness, and love in the lives of family members, friends, and those in need in the world today. Share ideas about ways to do this. Invite family members to put one seed in the glass bowl for every seed of God’s love they plant in the coming week. At the end of the week, reread the parable of the Mustard Seed and - if possible - plant your seeds and be surprised by what grows!

Discussion Starters

Someone who planted the seed of love in my life this past week is . . .

One seed I want to plant this week is . . .

One way our family can help the Kingdom of God grow is . . .
