De La Salle Old Boy: (3rd from left) Harold Konz attended the college in the mid 1930s and particularly enjoyed his running.

Susan Bailey recently contacted the school to share a little piece of her father's history. Harold Konz (3rd from left) attended De La Salle College in the mid 1930s and was involved various sporting activities and pursuits.  De La Salle College was founded in 1906 and when amalgamated with St Ursula's College in 1975 became O'Connor Catholic High School (now O'Connor Catholic College).

The end of year 'promotion certificate' gave acknowledgement that he had completed the courses listed to a satisfactory level in 1937 for Form 2, and could then progress onto Form 3.

In 1937 Harold competed in the annual athletics carnival. In those days, it was held in late September and it seems that he was a solid 400m (440 yards) athlete, winning the Junior Cup in a bit over 57 seconds and breaking the record.  The College Athletics Carnival was an important event, in the 1930s there was a much smaller range of sports for students to choose from generally and many of them worked hard on their running, jumping and throwing for the annual athletics carnival. The College, like many schools, printed out a booklet of events and past records etc for the students. On the 1938 cover it can be seen at the bottom that they were printed at the Armidale Express printery.

Thanks Susan for sharing these valuable pieces of school memorabilia.
