Armidale Eisteddfod

There have been many learning opportunities for our Music, Speech and Drama students over the last three weeks. Between preparing for and performing at the Armidale Eisteddfod, it has been a busy and rewarding time.

Dance

Some of our O'Connor students recently participated in the Armidale Dance Eisteddfod. Operating as a separate Eisteddfod, over 500 competitors participated over 5 days from all over the New England as well as Coffs Harbour, Kempsey and Brisbane.

Mrs Cherie Stossel

The last few newsletter items have examined the ongoing important place of HSIE subjects and languages in 21st century learning.  As our Year 10 students are approaching subject selection, it seems timely to include information about the HSIE and LOTE subjects available for study in Year 11 and Year 12.  A brief description of HSIE courses available at O’Connor Catholic College is below. Some courses such as Economics can be studied via distance education. Many courses offer options for study, so follow the links after each description for further detail.

Year 9 PASS and Year 7 PDHPE

Last week, the Year 9 PASS class had the opportunity to put their planning into action and coached some of our Year 7 students during a PDHPE practical lesson. The Coaching module they have been studying, helps develop skills in coaching and instruction. Students investigate qualities of effective coaching and assess their own and others’ coaching skills to become more effective sport coaches.

Textiles

Year 8 Technology has just completed a unit in the Textiles/Materials area. Following is the information that the students are given at the start of the unit. They work through the design process in folio form before constructing their product. The results were great. Here are some photos.

Design Situation

You have been selected to join the newly settled citizens at New Earth. You are only permitted to take vital essentials, as there is little room in the space vessel. It is imperative that you make your new dwelling feel like home as you will no doubt be a little homesick and isolated until you settle in.

Design Brief

Design and construct a cushion cover or pillowslip that provides a positive homely interior for you personally, OR for one of the New Earth residents. It needs to be as sustainable as possible, limiting the amount of resources that you use. So reduce, re-use or recycle.
