IDAHOBIT DAY

Big shout out to the wonderful Tiffany and Georgia, the well-being team, our student leaders, Louise and all those who contributed to such an awesome IDAHOBIT day – International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia and Intersex Discrimination. This is always an important day to stand with our LGBTIQ + community and speak up about the discrimination and violence they face and acknowledge the terrible impact this has on the mental health and well-being of students.

Were there homophobic, biphobic and transphobic slurs? Sure there were, there were even anti-semitic slurs but this only reinforces the reason these days are necessary.

I am proud to be an ally in a school that celebrates student voice and agency – it was wonderful to see the rainbow colours flying and students singing and dancing – and although there is still work to be done to consolidate our culture of supporting diversity and ensuring our community is tolerant and inclusive, yesterday was a bright, shiny

affirmation of our student body in action.

I have had many students expressing gratitude for the day and had many positive, challenging and thoughtful discussions in the classroom.

Cheers to us Epping – we do a great job!

YEAR 8 FLIPSIDE PERFORMANCE

On Tuesday, 18th May, the Year 8s participated in an incursion presented by Brainstorm Productions. Two performers came to the school and performed a short play about the impact that social media and the internet can have on teenagers. At the beginning of the play, one of the characters received an anonymous text message and discovered he was being blackmailed. The play then followed this character’s journey in solving the mystery of why he was being blackmailed. The importance of internet safety and having empathy and compassion for other people whether they be a stranger on the internet, or someone you know in real life was highlighted throughout the play. The performers from Brainstorm Productions did a wonderful job and reminded the students of the dangers associated with the internet as well as the appropriate ways for students to conduct themselves on the internet.
