Hosier Lane and Chinatown

Our year 11 VCAL class organised their own excursion to the city to explore Hosier Lane and Chinatown. This was a part of our Personal Development Outcomes. We had to develop an activity that would educate us about Melbourne culture and what makes Melbourne unique. On this excursion we explored Hosier Lane and China Town, unpacking the public’s thoughts about the graffiti alleyways, whether it was art or vandalism. Most people we surveyed believed it was art however, as we began surveying older people they were more inclined to think it was not art. We also tried to re create some of the artwork and found the artists are very talented. This helped us to understand what impact the alleyways like Hoiser Lane has on the culture of Melbourne City.

After this activity we walked to China Town. We walked the streets and discussed the impacts of COVID 19 on the Chinese community. We noticed a lot of stores have been shut down. This shows the effects of the lack of tourism in the city. We also discovered how China Town came to be in Melbourne which was due to the gold rush. On this part of the excursion we completed a quiz on what we learnt on the excursion.

We enjoyed this excursion as we bonded as class. We also found out more about each other. For some of our class mates this was the first or second time ever being in the city so we enjoyed exploring it together as a group.
