A practical lesson
Our Technology and Applied Science faculty
Our wonderful TAS (Technology and Applied Science), comprising of Industrial Arts/Technology and Home Economics faculties have been hard at work for yet another year. We have welcomed our new Head Teacher of Industrial Arts/Technology, Mr Miller, who has come to us with a wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas in teaching Technology.
It’s been a very busy year so far with the introduction of a new Hospitality VET (Vocational Education and Training) course delivered to our students in Year 9 by Mrs Tyson. We have also welcomed a number of other new staff members to our faculties with Mr Flexman and Mr Tugcu, teaching Engineering and Electronics to both Junior and Senior classes. Miss Portelli teaching Multimedia and Junior IST (Information Software & Technology).
Dynamic team of teachers
Our dynamic team of teachers have been guiding and supporting senior classes in completing their major practical projects in Design and Technology (Mr Miller), Industrial Technology – Timber (Mr Asre and Faga), Graphics (Mr Raj), and/or Multimedia (Ms Cheah and Miss Portelli) courses. We are fortunate to have very dedicated staff who go above and beyond to ensure our students produce their very best work for the HSC.
Innovative changes
There have been many new innovative changes made to our learning spaces with the setup of a new Maker Space. Students are now able to learn and use the latest in 3D printing and laser cutting Technology. Graphics and Design Computer spaces have been upgraded with the purchase of the latest best practice industry standard 3D modelling software. Timber workshops have been upgraded with new machinery and a construction workshop will soon be in place for the new VET construction course being offered to Year 11 students for the first time in 2018. Engineering will now be offered as a subject in years 9 and 10. The new program will give students 21st Century skills with the use of project based learning activities.
Exciting new activity
An exciting new activity in 2018 will be a Robotics programming workshop that is being developed in cooperation with Swinburne University of Technology.
In our Senior Hospitality VET course, Mrs Marando, arranged for her Year 12 students to do a certified barista coffee course meaning that a number of our students will qualify for an extra competency to their Certificate II Hospitality VET course. Some students have met the 10 hours coffee making requirement by running a coffee cart selling different styles of coffees and hot chocolate to teachers using a commercial coffee machine. Later on this year, Mrs Byron will also run this excursion with our 2018 Year 12 cohort of Hospitality VET students. Both hospitality teachers have also worked tirelessly to ensure our students also met their 35 hours of work placement which is a mandatory in both Year 11 and Year 12 respectively.
Great excursions
Our students have partaken in a number of great excursions, Mrs Marin took her Year 10 Food Technology to Sydney Tower Restaurant to get insight to the food catering and service industry. Students were taken behind the scenes and toured the commercial kitchen, spoken to by the head chef and the front of house restaurant manager. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and then had lunch in the revolving restaurant. Students had a wonderful time we also toured the food court in The Sky Gardens and the Myer food court. Needless to say the students came home very full with lovely food they ate.
Delivery of electives
2018 will also see major changes to the delivery of our year 8-10 electives and all our staff are engaging in making our courses to be fun and interesting to our students, incorporating 21st Century skills. Mrs Marin and Mrs Raj have been working on making changes to Year 9/10 Food Technology and all TAS staff will work on the Junior Year 8 Technology course.
We hope students will continue to choose and enjoy what we have to offer in the Technology courses. We’d like to extend to all our Year 12 students all the very best in their up and coming Trial HSC and final year examinations. C Marin and L Miller, Head Teachers
