Youth Mental Health Forum
Last Tuesday on the 5 June, a group of Kildare students were invited to attend the Wagga Wagga Youth Mental Health Forum held in the Mater Dei Primary School Hall. Twenty five regional schools came together to engage and participate in numerous activities supporting awareness for mental health. The first part of the forum consisted of students getting to know one another through activities that required effective teamwork and efficient communication. As well as this, a special guest, Gus gave a personal, informative speech on his experiences with mental health. Following this, a two hour session was held by health professionals who answered questions from students regarding the topic of mental health and what students can do if they or somebody they know is struggling with a mental health problem. Finally, each of the twenty-five different schools were then separated, allowing collaboration on a project that would ultimately promote and raise awareness for mental health in their schools. Our project involved the idea of enhanced support to Stage Five students transitioning to senior years, who are often faced with significant academic pressure. Overall, the Youth Mental Health Forum was an engaging, factual event that we strongly suggest students continue to attend for the years to come.
