Alpine 2018

ALPINE 2018

The Alpine School for Student Leadership is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps and is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique  8 week residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects. In 2017, students were asked to apply by interview for a position at this School. Nikola Jerumane, Emily Jones, Monte Butler, Adam Sharp and Sam McGuire were the successful students to attend and the Middle school would like to congratulate them all for being such fine representatives of the college during Term One.

Alpine was an amazing experience that I  wish I could re-live again. The whole area was different including the lifestyle that made a positive change to the way I see myself and what I am capable of.   This opportunity  taught me more about working in teams, independence and social skills, all things I would never have got a hold on if I had not attended.

Activities included mountain biking and hiking Victoria's second highest mountain in under 8 hours, flipping upside down when our raft sunk in the water, underground caving with spiders and glow worms, hiking with a fractured toe for three days,  watching snow fall and finding a leetch in my bellybutton.  These were all things I have never done before.  I learnt from challenges, experiences and success, but most importantly I made great friendships and a long lasting memory I will never forget. I really wish I could do all the things I did again, it was different but I loved every minute.

Living without a phone taught me about the things I can experience without posting it or purely living life with a bunch of amazing people.

My highlight from the Alpine Camp would have to be the 3 day hike, going mountain biking down steep hills and climbing through a river under the ground. I learnt a lot about teamwork, leadership and goal setting. If I had the opportunity I would definitely go back as it was such a fun learning experience.

One of my favourite highlights from the Alpine school would have to be expedition two which was a three day hike. The reason this was my favourite highlight was because of the views we got to see when we got to the tops of all the hills.

My other two highlights would have to be bridge building and when it snowed. The reason I have chosen these two is because they were both fun and exciting times. The snow was shocking because nobody was expecting to see any and the bridge building was a big challenge but worth it in the end because as a group we all learnt a valuable lesson.

YEAR 9/10 OUTDOOR CAMP

On the 26th, 27th and 28th of March the year 9/10 Outdoor Ed class went on a camp experience. On the morning of the 26th, we drove for around two and a half hours until we made it to the gorgeous seaside town of Lorne. The sun was shining, the water was clear and we were all buzzing to start our first surf lesson of the trip.  After many waves, we made our way to the campsite and set up camp; this site would become our home for the next two nights. For dinner, we got to cook our own food on a trangia (camping stove). There was a wide menu of food being cooked, including 2-minute-noodles, spaghetti and bean and rice burritos. These dinners concluded our first day of an action-packed adventure.

Our second day was one to remember. We all got up early, packed our lunch and set off for our six-hour hike. We then proceeded to hike up and down 12kms of Lorne National Park, until we finally returned to our bus. We saw some gorgeous sights of nature, including wildlife and probably the most beautiful waterfall I’ve ever seen. That night we got to explore the lovely town of Lorne, meet the locals and enjoy our dinner.

Eventually the third day came around. We had an early surf lesson, which unfortunately didn’t bare many waves. The weather was nice though, and we all loved our time in the water. For the trip back to home, we took the Queenscliffe ferry to Sorrento and made our way back to school.

Overall, it was an amazing camp, with new friendships made every day. I believe I speak for everyone when I say we would do it again in a heartbeat.
