What's Been Happening?

Principal's Report

Over the last couple of weeks we have witnessed some of the worst elements of society and immediately followed by the best.  The tragedy of the Christchurch shootings will live in our memories for ever, as it should.  As parents, carers and teachers we aspire to giving our children a future full of peace and unity.  If this is to be more than a desire, we have a responsibility to learn from this tragedy.  Diversity and acceptance is the strength that holds our society together and makes us such a great nation of people.  Cowra High’s core values are “Respect” and “Responsibility”.  Not mere words, within our school community we promote, model and live respect for all people.  Intolerance and disrespect of people is not who we are, in the same way it is not who Australia is.  Like most, I have admired the response from New Zealand Prime Minister Ardern, her words to a group of Christchurch school students are worthy of being repeated, "… it also means making a place where there is no environment for violence to flourish - where we don't let racism exist.  Because racism breeds extremism, it breeds some of things that we have unfortunately had visited on us in New Zealand.  I alone cannot get rid of those things by myself.  I need help from every single one of us.  If you want to do something to make a difference ... let New Zealand be a place where there is no tolerance for racism.”  Replacing New Zealand with Australia and the message is clear.  Cowra High does and will not tolerate racism, we celebrate our differences.  I ask your support in helping make the future for our children a better one.  I have informed our students of the support the school has if anyone is distressed by the events in Christchurch.  If you feel your child is suffering and needs to talk to someone, please contact the school and we will do our best to help.

Reflecting our Responsible values, I draw your attention to Lleyton Edenborough and Boston Petty-O'Brien, who last week found a little Year 2 student who had gotten on the wrong bus to travel home.  They organised for his mother to be contacted and then looked after him until he could be collected.  I congratulate these boys on their responsible and caring behaviour.  They have again demonstrated the quality of Cowra High students.  Outstanding!

I also congratulate the Cowra High Swim team.  It was fantastic news to hear that so many students have been selected for the Western Region team.  I know many hours of training goes into achieving such standard.  Well done team, I now look forward to hearing of your continued success.

Have a wonderful fortnight.
