Please join the Great Cycle Challenge
Why you ask…
Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia. Over 600 Australian children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 children die every week.
Last year I did the Great Cycle challenge to raise funds for children’s cancer research.
Last year I raised $1,835 and if everyone in the school participated this year imagine how much money we could raise together. This year I would like to form a team with all of you out there and Mr McClare has agreed to allowing us to form a school team to raise money for this worthy cause. The challenge is to ride as many kilometres as you can during October but as you will see from the website people have already begun to sign up. Each team can have any number of riders in it. As the leader of the school’s team I would love it if every one of you could join me to raise funds for kids with cancer.

Thomas L made it to Divisional Finals and came fourth just missing out on a spot in Regional Tennis Finals. Well done to all boys, excellent work, you should be all feel proud of your achievements!
Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)
The AMC is a mathematics competition run by the Australian Mathematics Trust for students from year 3 up to year 12. We are inviting all students in years 3 to 6 to participate in the competition that will be held on Thursday 9th August. If you are interested in your child participating, you will need to complete a permission notice that each class teacher has copies of. There is also a cost of $6.00 per student. Entry forms and payment need to be returned by Wednesday 27th June.
The competition is for students of all standards. Students are asked to solve thirty problems in 60 minutes. Like last year, we are going to use the online format with students using laptops to complete the test. The test is designed so that the first problems are easier and all students would be able to attempt them with success. The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking rather than focus on calculations themselves, thus such questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as with one. The problems get progressively more difficult until the end, when they are challenging to the most gifted students. Students of all standards will make progress and find a point of challenge.
Many of the questions are based on problem solving and real life scenarios that the students can relate to. The first 20 questions are intended to be directly familiar to students from their classroom experience and then become more difficult.
All students will receive a detailed report showing how they went on each problem and receive a certificate indicating their performance later in the year. Last year we had 37 students participate in the competition with pleasing results.

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Marlborough Primary School is excited to be participating.
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 7 September 2018.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child‘s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the attached form and return it to your school.
To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc
If you would like your child to be registered for the Premiers Reading Challenge please email Lisa Mackney via Compass with your childs name and grade. A password will then be forwarded to you with details on how to access the portal. Alternatively contact your class teacher.
