Grade Bulletin - Term Three, 2023

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:

  • Participate in the life and mission of the school.

Religious Education

K.4 Belonging to God’s People

This unit introduces the students to religious imagery, to the church building, its furnishings and to gestures used. The celebration of the Eucharist is introduced with a focus on key liturgical actions and objects used. 

 

K.5 God’s Great Family

This unit begins with the story of Abraham and Sarah. It is a story of promise and trust and is formative to our identity as the People of God. The second part of the unit introduces Jesus’ family and tells two short stories of Jesus as a boy. The story of the People of God begins a new chapter in the person of Jesus. This unit focuses on belonging both in the family and with all the People.

English

Reading Fluency and Reading Comprehension:

The children will continue to develop their skills and strategies to read decodable texts. Students will develop the ability to stop at the end of a sentence in response to a full stop and regulate their voice to respond to punctuation such as exclamation marks. Students will continue to recall and recount events or characters in a text to express their understanding of the book and expand their vocabulary by clarifying unknown words. 

 

Creating Written Texts:

This term, the children will understand and respond to quality literature. They will learn to compose their own simple persuasive and imaginative texts. They will focus on recording the initial, middle and final sounds of words as well as writing high-frequency words. The children will demonstrate an awareness of nouns, adjectives, conjunctions and pronouns. 

 

Spelling and Phonemic awareness:

The students will continue Phase 2 of the ‘Sound Waves Spelling’ Program. 

 

Oral Language and Communication: 

Students learn to listen for understanding, contribute to social and learning interactions, use correct tense when speaking and retell details of a story or event. Oral Language and Communication tasks are necessary for students to become successful readers and writers. The children will continue to present their special ‘NEWS’ to the class weekly.

Mathematics

The students will be explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus with a focus on communication, reasoning and understanding. Activities are differentiated to cater for all student needs and abilities. 

 

The topics taught in Term 3 are:

  • Representing Whole Number
  • 2D Spatial Structure  (2D Shapes and Area)
  • Combining and Separating Quantities
  • 3D Spatial Structure (Volume)
  • Geometric Measure (Length)
  • Data
  • Forming Groups

Science and Technology

This term, in the Earth and Space strand, students will learn about daily and seasonal changes in the environment. The children investigate how living things respond to these changes. They explore their immediate surroundings, the daily weather and ask questions about their observations and experiences.

Mandarin

This term students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will continue to participate in the Chinese language program called the Meg Language Program. The Meg Curriculum is written by the co-author of the Australian Curriculum. All students and teachers will participate in the digital learning platform via Zoom weekly sessions with educators in China.

History

This term, students will develop skills of historical inquiry and communication. They will learn about their own history and that of their family, this may include stories from a range of cultures and other parts of the world. Students will recognise differences and similarities between individuals and families in the past and present.

Amadeus Music Program

Students will continue their participation in the Amadeus Music Education program, introduced by Sydney Catholic Schools to our school this year.

 

Students will participate in activities in listening, performing and organising sound (Kindergarten to Year 6), within their regular Classroom Music lessons. Within these lessons, students will:

  • Sing in unison and in parts
  • Play tuned and untuned percussion instruments
  • Play available instruments such as Ukulele, Guitar and Keyboard (Grade appropriate)

Creative Arts

In Creative Arts for this term, students will participate in 5 weeks of Music and 5 weeks of Drama. During Music lessons, students will be exploring the elements of music including pitch, duration and dynamics. Students will use body percussion and instruments to experiment with these elements of music. During Drama lessons, students will be focusing on body language and facial expressions to depict and recognise emotions.

 

In Visual Arts, the students will use a variety of media to create artwork including oil pastels, paint, watercolour and collage. Students will create Aboriginal Art using various techniques. The children will also reflect on and appreciate the works of other artists. The students will create artwork based on a shortlisted CBCA picture book and their final products will be displayed in the Library for Book Week in Week 6.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

Students will demonstrate a variety of locomotor skills in anticipation of a game/sport scenario. Hand-eye coordination, object control skills, maintaining stability and responding to movement stimuli will be the main focus. Students will develop multiple skills through game sense in individual and team environments such as simple ball games and modified sports. This Term, students will participate in a K-2 Fun and Fitness Day on Friday, 4 August. Students participate in running races and a variety of games. 

 

K-6 students are also participating in Jump Rope for Heart this term, which will focus on skipping for children with sick hearts. If you wish to register to raise funds use this link jumprope.org.au/parents

 

This term, students will participate in the ‘Open Parachute’ program. They will learn to identify their likes and dislikes, how to persist with challenging tasks and the importance of trying new things. There will be a focus on the student's growth mindset. 

Homework 

Kindergarten will begin Homework in Week 2. Homework will consist of daily reading, sight words and counting work. Further information will be sent home at the beginning of Week 2.

Students are to wear their sports uniform on these days.

Each week, students will have the opportunity to borrow books from our school library. Please ensure your child brings their Library Bag to school each Wednesday.
