PATHWAYS & CAREERS

MS SALLY LOONEY & MS BRENDA BRADY - PATHWAYS TEAM

We support students in all year levels, whether it be subject selection, work experience, university applications or assistance getting into the work force. We have a fortnightly class with the Year 12 students and Year 9 students, weekly Pathways classes with Year 10 students and a scheduled class at least once a term to meet with Year 11 students.

The Year 9 and Year 10 classes are designed to inspire students to explore pathways options through interests and subjects they enjoy now, but to also understand that it is OK if their pathway plans change over time. Many students also come to our office asking for assistance if they are seeking part-time employment and they need help preparing their resume.

Year 10 Work Experience Program

We have spoken to all Year 10 students in their Pathways class about work experience and were surprised to find out that a number of students had not yet had a discussion with their parents about this! This is a wonderful opportunity for students to do a placement in an industry of their choice. Placements are prominently in Swan Hill, but students are able to venture further afield with their parent’s support. Scheduled dates this year are as follows:

10A      Monday, May 8th to Friday, May 12th

10B      Monday, September 4th to Friday, September 8th

10C     Monday, October 23rd to Friday, October 27th

Another part of work experience preparation is learning more about Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and ensuring all students have a good understanding of OH&S issues. In addition to completing this module, any student who wishes to do work experience on a construction site must also complete a Construction Induction training to obtain a White Card.

Students studying VET Building and Construction complete this training as part of their course, however other Year 10 students are able to obtain their White Card by joining the training that will be held at school on March 14th. This is a whole day course with a cost of $150.00 per student. Names and payment must be provided to the Front Office by Thursday, March 9th.

Looking for work?

With many young people leaving Swan Hill for further education options or due to full-time employment, now is a very good time for students seeking part-time work to start dropping off their resume to local businesses or applying online – especially Coles and Woolworths, McDonalds, Subway, KFC, local Café’s and retail outlets.
