FETE

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!

The Fete is fast approaching and now that we have built some excitement and know our activities, we need some of our wonderful parents to volunteer. We are asking for you to spare half an hour to help out. This may include assisting with the set up, pack up and running of the stall - many hands make light work. If a time doesn't suit your child/children’s class please feel free to help out one of the other Scotsburn classes. We would appreciate any help. We can’t wait for it!

Scotsburn Parent Committee Meeting and Morning Tea

Today we held our first parent catch up for the year. It was great to discuss all things Scotsburn and make some plans for the year ahead. One aspect that we focussed on was continuing to promote parent and community involvement, including regular catch ups and morning teas. Keep an eye out for these catch ups in the future, and please come in for a coffee and a chat whenever you can!

Toastie Tuesdays!!!

After our parent morning tea, we have decided to begin adding a few more regular events throughout the week. The first one of these to start next week will be Toastie Tuesdays!!! Each Tuesday, we will be offering toasties for sale at lunchtime. To purchase, students only need to bring $1 and it is all theirs! Next week we will have two potions - cheese, or cheese and vegemite. We will send out a reminder on Compass early next week.

Whole School Assembly this Friday

This Friday is a whole School Assembly. We will meet in the morning in the courtyard at the Buninyong campus. After the assembly, we will again have the opportunity to play in the gym and borrow some books from the library. If you have a book bag, please remember to bring it along.

At recess, we will bus back up to Scotsburn to finish the day as per usual. Please contact your teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Interhouse Athletics Day

Our interhouse athletics day for 3-6 students is also rapidly approaching. This is to be held on Tuesday 7th March. It is great to see students practising their running and field event skills in PE. It is another one of our major events on the school calendar and we can’t wait to head to Llanberris athletics track for the day. More information and details will be provided next week.

Supporting Your Child’s Reading at Home

Please see this week’s full school newsletter in the Teaching & Learning section for some helpful home reading tips. All teachers at Scotsburn really value our home reading connection between school and families. If you have any questions around how to best support your child’s reading, please always reach out.

Prep Interviews

Just a reminder that Preps have Wednesdays off for the month of February. This time off is to ensure that children have the chance to recharge mid-week as they settle into school. We look forward to Preps starting with us full time in March.

Sounds-Write Training

Buninyong Prep - Grade 2 staff are lucky enough to be undertaking a training course called ‘Sounds-Write’. This is a phonics based programme that allows students to understand how sounds are represented by the writing system. This course runs from Week 5 - Week 8 and will take both Mrs Robinson and Mrs Anderson out of the classroom on Fridays. The wonderful Mrs Micallef will be in SC1 while the training course is on.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

Our wonderful Prep/One class this week…

A focus last week and this week has been around rhyme. We are looking at identifying rhyme in books and generating rhyming words. All students came home with a rhyme book they created in class last week. I am sure they enjoyed sharing it with you. In Writing, we are exploring how to write a sentence. This includes orally creating a sentence, letter sounds, word knowledge, and using written words to create sentences that include a noun and adjectives.  In Maths, we have been learning about numbers and quantity as well as place value. It is wonderful to see how engaged and enthusiastic students are in their learning.

Over the last couple of weeks Preps and Grade Ones have been completing the English Online Interview (EOI) and the Maths Online Interview (MOI), and they have all been doing an amazing job! It's great to spend some quality one-on-one time with each of them and get to know them as learners. This also gives us valuable data, to help plan and support your child with their learning throughout the term.

Just a reminder, Preps start full-time next week.

Have a great week,

Ana and Kirsty

SC2 Learning Snapshot

Throughout week 4, students in SC2 commenced their Reading, Writing and Maths units of literal comprehension, narrative writing and place value respectively. Students have been focussing on adjectives throughout their writing to assist them in being able to describe their characters and settings. They have been able to develop this skill extremely well through playing a ‘describe me’ game (pictured below), as well as creating their own alien characters and settings!

Our Grade 2’s are currently undertaking their English Online Interviews and have made an amazing start in doing so. It has been lovely to listen to the students read and have these conversations with them one-on-one.

During the week, the students created posters of their names. As a class, students rotated around the room and wrote a compliment on each person’s poster (see below). The way that the students cooperated throughout this activity was amazing and they were left feeling valued within SC2. They displayed the values of being respectful, responsible and kind throughout the exercise.

Have a great week!

SC3 Learning Snapshot

This week in SC3 students have been diving deeper into persuasive writing, including what makes a text persuasive. We have had a lot of fun identifying persuasive devices and developing our persuasive skills through activities and games.

Our reading has had a strong focus on Summarising and identifying the main idea in texts that they read, view and listen to. We have also spent some time looking at what makes a good book a good book, and how to select books that are interesting and appropriate for each individual student.

In Maths, we have begun the year with a strong focus on number and place value, as well as applying these skills to calculate area and perimeter as part of a measurement unit. Students have begun creating their maths zoos, which has been fun to get underway!

Have another awesome week everyone,

Jarrod

Specialist News

This Wednesday we welcome Noriko Schwartz to our campus for her first full day as our language assistant. This is part of a funded program in partnership with Mt Clear SC and Buninyong campus, and we are lucky enough to have Noriko attending our Japanese classes here at Scotsburn every second Wednesday for terms 1-3. Noriko is a native speaker of Japanese language and will greatly enrich our Japanese program with her support and expertise. She is also a parent at Buninyong PS and has previously had a child at Scotsburn. Please come and say Konnichiwa and introduce yourself to her at pick-up if you get the chance!

We have been busy creating some fantastic artworks over the last few weeks! Currently SC1 are experimenting with collage and paper sculpture; SC2 are exploring ways to reimagine artworks with the mindset of “mistake to masterpiece” with a bit of help from some surrealist techniques; and SC3 are focussing on developing some yard art and some artistic displays for our Japanese space based on Usagi Doshi (Year of the Rabbit).

We are currently seeking some parent helpers for an SC1 gelli-printing workshop later in the term, as well as to assist with face-painting at the school fete. Please see Liz if you are interested in finding out more!
