From the Principal

Patrick Green

Dear Families,

NAPLAN

This week our Year 3 and Year 5 students have been doing the NAPLAN testing.  As the current Year 5s didn’t do these in 2020, it is the first time for all these students.  Apart from the Year 3 Writing Test, all other tests are conducted online.

Our students have equipped themselves very well across the three tests they have undertaken so far; Writing, Reading and Conventions of Language.  The Numeracy test will be conducted next Tuesday.

Whilst the NAPLAN results are just one test that provides a snapshot in time it offers valuable data for both parents and teachers.  As teachers we use the data to help track individual progress as well as gain insights into trends across a cohort and over time across the school.  You can read more about NAPLAN here, if you are unfamiliar with its purpose and parameters.

It is important to note that: NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Each teacher will have the best insight into their students’ educational progress. Parents/carers can use NAPLAN reports, along with other school assessment reports, to discuss their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with their teacher.

Mother’s Day Liturgy

We had an excellent turn out at our first community liturgy in some time.  It was wonderful to have many mums and motherlike figures attend the liturgy and morning tea.  They were dazzled by our Preps who performed an alphabet song and another highlight was seeing the many photos of mums with their children during a slideshow.  Thanks to all parents and carers who attended and to those that came along and helped out. It was great to have our community together again for such an event.

Assemblies

We have started holding school assemblies this term on a Monday morning at the start of the day (8.50am).  Our school leaders are enjoying the opportunity to lead the assemblies and it is a wonderful way to develop and foster school spirit as we pray together, hear about events happening in the school, celebrate birthdays, share learning, including Italian word of the week and recognise award winners.  Parents and carers are always welcome to attend.

Our School Feast Day, Prada Willi Fundraiser & Italian Day

We will be celebrating St Mary’s feast day on May 24, Italian Day on June1 and fundraising for Prada Willi Foundation on May 27.  They will all be days to look forward to for our students and we will share more about those events in coming days as well as share photos and reflections at the appropriate time.

On Tuesday 24th of May we will begin a collection of non-perishable items for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. This is also the feast day of Mary, Our Lady Help of Christians and we wish to begin this appeal with a whole school liturgy.  Please see more details in the RE section of this newsletter.  We invite all in our community to support this appeal to help those in need.

We are also holding a Prader Willi Fundraising day on May 27th.  This will be supported by  a short assembly, wearing orange ($2.00 coin donation please) and other activities.  Stay tuned for more about this day also.

Thanks

I would like to share a note of thanks to our school community who were represented by our four school leaders as highlights in our last newsletter.

“On behalf of the Montmorency Eltham RSL Committee I wish to sincerely thank you for your involvement in our ANZAC Day Ceremony.

Please keep the Costantin family (Asher 5/6A) in your thoughts and prayers at this sad time as Asher's Pa (Dean's father), passed away recently.
