GAME DESIGN

"The successful free to play games are selling positive emotions. Not content."

-Nicholas Lovell, Game Designer and Author

This course gives students the opportunity to design and produce computer games. In this course studnets will learn how to plan, design, build and monetise their computer games. When creating games students will use a range programming languages and engines to cater for different levels of ability. The course provides the opportunity to build programming and graphic design skills using Godot, a Python based engine and GameMaker.

Within this course there is a strong focus on design through the creation of sprites and levels. Project management will also feature in the course, and students will need to create proposals and milestones for the completion of their game.

The skills that are developed in course will assist students in the following ATAR courses: Computer Science, Applied Information Technology (AIT) and Design.

CYBER SECURITY

“There was this absolutely horrible moment where I realized there was absolutely nothing at all that I could do.” - Amy Pascal, Former CEO of Sony Pictures

As our world becomes increasingly dependent on technology and the Internet, companies such as Sony are coming to the realisation that protecting themselves from the growing threat of cyber-attacks is essential to a company’s success. Cyber Security is a growing field, and this course aims to equip students with the latest skills and tools that will allow them to identify vulnerabilities and come up with policies and software programs that will protect us from this ever-evolving threat. This course will involve a large amount of skills-based practical activities and Cyber Security exercises. Throughout the course students will examine the fundamental principles of how information is stored and communicated via a computer network. Students will also investigate the potential vulnerabilities in networks and how attackers exploit them. An opportunity will be available to visit the Cyber Security Centre at ECU Joondalup.

The skills that students develop in course will assist them in the following ATAR courses: Computer Science, Applied Information Technology (AIT) and Design.

BIG DATA BIG BUSINESS

“Data is the new Science. Big Data holds the answers" - Pat Gelsinger Chief Executive Officer at VMware

This is an advanced computing class that focusses on the importance of data storing, manipulation and analysis. Students who excel in the fields of Science, Technology, Enterprise and Maths will see this unit as challenging and rewarding. In addition, students will complete a formal Computer Science qualification run through Curtin University. By completing this unit students will gain a strong understanding of Python the most popular programming language in the world. It will also give them a strong grasp of mathematical modules such as Matlib that can be used in engineering to model algorithms and graph data to find trends. Other assessments will focus on the application of data in a business setting. Through the involvement of business partnerships students will be given real life scenarios where data mining and trend analysis is used to inform business decisions.

The skills that students develop in course will assist students in Year 11 ATAR Computer Science.

GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR BRANDING

"Digital design is like painting, except the paint never dries" - Neville Brody

In Graphic Design for Branding students will learn industry standard design skills and procedures. They will develop skills in software from the Adobe Creative Suite while completing innovative and exciting design challenges. Possible projects could include hand lettering and typography, packaging design, poster and print design, logos and corporate profiles. This course is perfect for those new to Design and for those who have existing skills they want to develop.

Graphic Design for Branding is also a great subject to prepare for Year 11 subjects Design, Certificate III in Visual Arts, Applied Information Technology and Visual Art.

STEM – ROBOTICS FIRST LEGO LEAGUE

“I hope that by 2050 the entire solar system will have been explored and mapped by flotillas of tiny robotic craft.” - Martin Rees

The First Lego League is a nationally run competition that helps develop students' problem-solving skills. The competition will allow students to use the skills gained in the introduction to robotics course and apply them to specific challenges.

These STEM based problem solving challenges require students to design, build and program a LEGO robot that completes missions issued by LEGO. The culmination of all their efforts will lead to students' participation in the First Lego League competition that is held at Curtin University. The skills learnt in this course will enhance their success in WACE Subjects such as Computer Science. In ever-changing job market that values automation, collaboration, problem-solving and technology this course is a must.

MY KITCHEN MY FOOD

“To me, food is as much about the moment, the occasion, the location and the company as it is about the taste.” - Heston Blumenthal

This course has a focus on developing and improving skills and knowledge through a variety of activities including exploring and designing juices and smoothies, developing sustainable food products for a food expo and creating healthy fast food for friends (and themselves).

Students work in pairs to produce recipes such as apple strudel, cake, biscuits, stir fries and other nutritious savoury food. They explore the social, ethical and sustainability factors surrounding the development, production, supply and consumption of food. They also look into the development of food solutions, focusing on the physical and sensory properties and the health and safety factors involved is a focus.

TASTE THE WORLD (COOKING AND CULTURE)

“Cookery is not chemistry. It is an art. It requires instinct and taste rather than exact measurements” - Marcel Boulestin

The foods we eat may be determined by our social customs, climate and geography. It is very difficult to talk about food without mentioning culture. Traditional cuisine is passed down and is a way of preserving culture. Importantly, what we eat and where we live are related.

Looking after our environment, eating sustainably and nutritionally are important aspects of food choice. In this unit will be able to discover culture and the relationships with food and produce foods from a wide range of countries and culture, including Australia.

Students will develop an understanding of food sustainability and eating local. Tasks will include developing foods for an International Banquet and creating their own Paddock to Plate recipe. Techniques, skills and practises for a variety of cultural cuisines will be a focus.
