Year 9 and 10 Boys Football

The Year 9 and 10 boys football team competed in the Bob Templeton Division One local schools’ competition on Wednesday. Coming up against Portland Secondary College and Baimbridge College in the first two games, the boys played impressive football as we recorded comfortable victories to head into the final against Monivae College

Monivae was also undefeated for the day and had a talented team.  A strong start was important as we kicked with the wind in the first half and when Eli Hunter slotted a goal just before the break we were still in the game. However, after the break, despite some determined defensive efforts, Monivae were too strong. Well done to Co-Captains Mitchell Bright and George Austin for their leadership on the day and thanks also to Football Captains, Harry Mahar and Fletcher Bright, for their assistance.

Major goalkickers for the day included Maddox Blake and Eli Hunter. Better players included Liam Bilenkij (voted player of the day), George Huf, Ted Hunter, Charlie Whitehead, Luke Pickering and Blake.

ICCES Athletics

The ICCES Carnival was held last week at Albert Park Lakeside stadium in Melbourne. A most successful and enjoyable day was had by the students and a full report will be available from the Captains.

Summer Sports Awards

Our Assembly this week saw some of our most talented and committed students in the summer sports of rowing, cricket and swimming get recognised. Old Collegian, past School Captain and College Cricket Club life member and legend, Hamish Bailey, was the guest speaker and relayed to the students the importance of perseverance in sport and never giving up to achieve your goals and dreams.

For those who would like to know more about the school sporting awards, process please see the attached document in this newsletter. They can also be found in the Sport folder on PAM.

ICCES Athletics Report

It was an early start for our athletes, making the long journey to Melbourne for the annual ICCES athletics. The team was slightly undermanned due to various injuries and sickness,  but that didn’t stop those who competed by putting on a show and giving their best effort.

The sun was shining at Albert Park on a near perfect day for the athletes to run, jump or throw on some first-class facilities. The day saw numerous podium placings out on the field as well as on the track. Some standout performances included:

Poppy Austin 2nd place in the 400m, 800m and 1500m events.

Maddie Green 1st in U21 long jump, with a leap of 4.41m and second in discus.

Chloe Adams 1st in Year 8 girls - 400m

Molly Walker 1st in Year 7 shot put - 7.06m

Luca Wagner 1st in Year 10 - 400m

Ted Koch 1st in shot put

Jack Wortley 1st 200m and 3rd discus

Year 7 boys relay, 2nd

Thank you to everyone who competed on the day. A huge thank you to Mr Alexander for all of his organising and hard work that he puts in behind the scenes. Also, thanks to our athletics coach Rohan Garfoot for all of the selfless work he put into trainings and athletics days.

Open Men's Hockey

Following a much-improved performance in our second game, which we were unlucky to lose 1-2, the boys entered last Sunday’s match against Couldabeens with some confidence. With fathers, teachers and one of the College’s IT specialists in the opposition, this was a game to win!

Sadly, we began horribly … and found ourselves down by 3 goals early in the first period.

I was immensely proud, however, with the way the boys responded to this situation. There was no dropping of heads, rather an increased intensity and we found we could have more of the play. Indeed, we created a couple of good chances and Captain Charley Falla-Jones whistled a shot past the post with the goalie beaten.  Although some defensive confusion late in the game saw us concede a fourth goal, the boys could walk off the field with heads high.

Byron McMahon, in his first game for us this season, grew in confidence in goals and thwarted a number of our opponents' forward thrusts.  Isaac Shaw was tireless in midfield, Harry Mould strong in the backline and Tobe Adamson and Will Merrin each saw plenty of the ball.

This is a very young and, at this level, inexperienced team.  They are beginning to manage the step up to the speed of the men’s game.

I will miss their next two games and have challenged the boys to make me feel redundant by winning at least one of them!  I will be keen to hear the results.

Mr Hawthorne will look after the team at games in my absence and Miss Waldron will manage the one training session I will miss.

Women's Hockey

A mixed set of results for our B Grade and Division One Women on Sunday. B Grade managed a 1-1 draw against Coleraine in a very tight contest. Sophie Spence is enjoying a standout season and she is well supported by Millie Davidson, goalie Emily McNaughton and Captain Finlay Cameron. Although we are still in the early stages of the season, with the combination of youth and experience in this side they should be looking confidently at finals.

A Grade were defeated by Dunkeld 3-1 on Saturday, sadly conceding a goal in the final seconds of play. This is a very new side, and it is encouraging to see their improvement each week. Sarah Andersen, Lucy Roberts and Olivia Read are forming a great combination on the backline and young stars Ava Mould and Sophie Merrin have quickly adjusted to the pace of A Grade.

We enjoyed the most wonderful afternoon of hockey on Saturday with the 150th exhibition match. 23 Old Collegians returned to play the current young crop of stars. At one point we had 44 players on the field! The “oldies” were too strong defeating the young guns 6-2 in a highly entertaining game. My thanks to Mrs Alana Brown and to Mr Hugh Koch for making this event possible. Thank you also to Mr MacLean and Ben Read for their rather one-sided umpiring.
