Morrisby Career Assessment

Last week, our Year 9 students completed the Morrisby Career Assessment. The assessment will help students discover, develop and drive their career planning. It is a unique opportunity for students to learn more about their strengths and abilities while exploring potential career options – giving them the confidence to start taking control of their future.

From Monday 3 May, students will have a 30 minute individual interview with an external Careers Consultant to discuss their results

1st Year

Plumbing Apprenticeship

A 1st year apprentice is needed for immediate start in the Lilydale. If interested, please ring Jess on 0448 513 074.

Work is mostly domestic and roofing with other general plumbing work. Students do not need to have a drivers licence to apply for this position.

Work Experience

Students from Years 10 to 12 have the opportunity this year to undertake 'Work Experience' to develop their awareness of appropriate attitudes and behaviour in real work environments, to explore employment and career options, to develop contacts with potential employers and to observe the use made of skills taught in school subjects.

Work Experience at Lilydale High School can occur at any time within the school year for up to 5 school days or 10 days.

Students interested in completing Work Experience, should speak to a Careers Practitioner who will inform them of necessary processes and forms required to complete Work Experience.

Tax File Numbers

Any student will need at tax file number if they start work (part-time and full-time) and all students planning on a tertiary education require one when they start.

Importantly, current Year 12 students are reminded that they will be requested to provide their Tax File Number (TFN) on enrolment to TAFE or university next year, so it is worthwhile getting an application submitted early!

Students must now apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office.

Compare ED

The ComparED website provides prospective students with relevant and transparent information about Australian higher education institutions from the perspective of current students and recent graduates.

With ComparED, students can explore and compare the quality of higher education institutions and study areas they are interested in based on the experiences of others.

The ComparED website allows students to compare specific institutions and/or study areas. The data available is sourced from the Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) surveys.

Apprenticeships

Why should I do one?

More than half (56.6%) of respondents of the recently released Apprentice and Trainee Experience and Destinations 2019 survey by NCVER took up apprenticeships or traineeships for employment-related reasons. The good news is that a large majority of those who finished their apprenticeship – almost 88% - were employed after they completed their training. This was even higher for those who finished a trade apprenticeship, with over 91% employed after they completed their training.

In the trades, more than one-third of people surveyed said their primary motivation to undertake a trade was their desire to work in that type of job (38%). The other top reasons included, gaining a recognised qualification or certificate (19%). In non-trade occupations, more people did a traineeship or apprenticeship because it was a requirement for their jobs (22.9%).

The survey also demonstrated that there are benefits of doing an apprenticeship, even for those who ended up not completing one. While completers of apprenticeships or traineeships saw benefits in terms of employment, getting a job or gaining extra skills and knowledge – 38% of non-completers reported gaining in knowledge, experience and additional skills despite not completing the training. 43% of non-completers were employed in the same occupation as their apprenticeship or traineeship.

Deakin University Campus Tours – April School Holidays

There's only one way to choose a uni. You've got to experience it for yourself and we are excited to announce that Deakin is open for campus tours.

Deakin Campus Tours will allow students and their families to experience their preferred Deakin University campus through a tailored tour, during the upcoming school holidays.

Guests will join a 45-minute tour with a current Deakin student and get a first-hand look at the cutting-edge facilities and have all their study questions answered.

The school holiday program will be held at all four Deakin campuses: Burwood, Waurn Ponds, Waterfront and Warrnambool.

Working as an Auslan Interpreter

The Good Careers Guide indicates that interpreters use their knowledge of languages and cultures to convert a spoken or signed language into another spoken or signed language, usually within a limited time frame and in the presence of the participants who need to communicate.

Interpreters may perform the following tasks:

interpret verbal or signed communications between two parties
provide interpretations of conversations or speeches
express the meaning and feeling of what is said or signed in another language in the appropriate tone and style within a range of settings
verbally translate written texts

Good Careers Guide - Interpreter

Auslan interpreters facilitate communication between deaf (or hard of hearing) and hearing people. They can be employed in a wide range of everyday settings – banks, legal meetings, hospitals, schools, TAFEs, universities, retail stores – and work in supporting effective communication.

Courses in Auslan is taught at a number of institutions including Melbourne Polytechnic. These include; Certificate II in Auslan and the Diploma of Auslan.

Skills Spiderweb

Different jobs need different skills. The Skills Spiderweb shows 12 skills that are common across many jobs. The size of the web shows the level of skill or expertise workers usually need to perform well in their job. So, the larger the web, the higher the skill level.

Students are encouraged to visit Skills Spiderweb and play with the little drop-down tab and explore the many jobs listed. Students can learn more about the skills required for particular jobs.

Health Fact Sheets

NSW Government Health has really useful medical specialty fact sheets to assist students in making more informed career choices about the many careers in the health industry, and to ensure their career plans not only fulfil their personal aspirations but also align with the needs of the industry.

Engineering Heroes Podcasts

Engineers Australia has now officially taken the helm of the Engineering Heroes podcast series. Students keen on a career in engineering may find these podcasts about the engineering challenges in today’s society of interest. Engineers discuss their work life and the issues they are dealing with.

There are various categories of podcasts including aerospace, building services, and computer systems. Visit Engineering Heroes and sign up for regular updates.

Students are encouraged to browse the very useful Your Career website which allows students to learn about occupations and explore career ideas.
