Year 6 Spotlight

A Focus on Maths in Year 6

Year 6 students have been working hard on learning and practising various multiplication strategies, through the use of hands-on activities, problem solving and real world examples. Some of these strategies include written algorithms, split strategy and the area model. These activities and strategies have enabled them to further develop their abilities to use multiplicative thinking in their everyday lives!

For Non Number, Year 6 students have been developing their skills to convert between metric units. They have also had the opportunity to measure and calculate the perimeter and area of everyday objects.

Towards the end of the length unit, students were given the task to create paper planes and record how far each paper plane could travel and convert the measurement to km, m, cm and mm.  Students worked very well collaboratively, assisted each other with measuring and finished it off with a friendly ‘longest paper plane’ competition.

The paper plane activity was extremely fun and a great way to further learn about converting metric units. We liked that the activity was hands on and a different way to learn. ~ Leo, Neon, George, Spencer, 6A

The activity was a cool experience and something that we would love to do again. ~ Victor and Elliot, 6A

I thought it was an exciting activity which related back to our Maths work in class and so great to be outside doing Maths. ~ Lila, 6B

Year 6 Community Leaders

This year, the community leaders have been extremely proactive towards developing initiatives to help improve and support our school community. They have engaged in several meetings as a group in order to discuss their ideas. This has allowed them to develop their student voice, be collaborative and thrive in their role as leaders of the school.

Last week they visited each classroom, and placed boxes around the school to collect suggestions/feedback from students. During their next meeting they will read through these and use them as a basis to work towards develop a goal.
