Year 3 Spotlight

Numeracy

Is this statement correct? 3,567 > 2,349.  How about this one? 5,679 < 6,879.

Year 3 students will know!

Term one has primarily focused on place value, we have explored;

  • The greater than, less than and equal to symbols <  = >
  • Numbers on a number lines.
  • Renaming numbers using thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
  • Rounding numbers so they are easier to use.
  • Odd and even numbers.

We have also spent time practising reading analogue and digital clocks and recognising 3D objects and their features.

Reading

In term one, we have been setting up the Reader’s Workshop. Students have explored how to choose a ‘good fit’ book using the IPICK strategy. We have looked at what a reading session should sound like, look like and feel like. We established the different stages of the Reader’s Workshop and now understand how to move from one stage to another. We have also worked through reading strategies, such as activating prior knowledge, making connections, inferring and visualising.

Writing

Have you ever tried to be persuasive or to convince someone to share your beliefs?

In term one, Year 3 students have been trying their hardest to do just that. The Year 3 students have been spending the term:

  • Analysing and reading persuasive texts
  • Planning texts
  • Drafting texts
  • Revising and editing their texts
  • Publishing their texts

Students were given the opportunity to choose their own passionate topics, varying from, ‘Why everyone deserves an education’ to, ‘Animals should not be kept in cages’.

Students have also enjoyed the freedom to write in other styles during rocket writing and seed writing sessions.

Health

Our inquiry unit this term was based around health. Students participated in lessons that helped them identify feelings and how they would best respond in certain situations. They engaged in targeted RRRR’s lessons based around emotional literacy and problem solving. Our school values of Respect, Creativity, Community and Excellence were explored to help classrooms set goals for the remainder of the year.

Students had the opportunity to visit other Year 3 classrooms where they completed lessons that focused on community health and how this has a positive impact on our society. They also looked at the effects of diet, physical activity, sleep and hygiene on their bodies and the different health messages they would see in the media. Students had a great time moving between classes and getting to know the other teachers.

Working with Year 6

Students spent some time in the Year 6 classrooms exploring what is means to be a member/citizen of the FPS community. Year 6, who are exploring Civics and Citizenship, created a FPS Citizenship Tests for their Year 3 counterparts. It was so much fun to complete the quizzes and discuss the responses together.
