From the Foundation Classrooms

Developmental Play - Term 2

Team Foundation students finished off Week 1 of Term 2 by experiencing their first official Developmental Play session. Students from FSB and FKJ came together on Friday afternoon to experience this program. Developmental Play comprises of four different activities: fine motor, free play, gross motor and gardening. The children will experience two of these activities each Friday afternoon. They have been grouped into mixed class groups so that they can socialise with students from the other grade. Developmental Play has many benefits for the development of the Foundation child.  Developmental Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them.

Next week, Grade Six student leaders will be joining the Foundation students to support them during the Developmental Play sessions. The Grade Six leaders will be responsible for planning future Developmental Play activities for Foundation students as well as supporting the children during these activities.

At the end of the first Developmental Play session, students were asked to reflect on their experiences. They were asked to give a score out of 10, to see how much fun they had in their first Developmental Play session. With huge smiles on their faces all children gave their experience a score of 10 out of 10!
