Zoo Excursions and Adaptations

Melbourne Zoo

On Tuesday the 20th of April, all of Grade 5/6 had a trip to the Melbourne Zoo. Full of education and adventure, we all had an awesome time!

"It was amazing to be up close and experience so many interesting animals and I felt like I was literally in the wild!" Jem E

Firstly, we went to the Animals Adaptations Workshop. Observing many animals, we gained a strong understanding on their adaptations to their natural habitat. We looked at different animals skulls or bone structures and we identified the type of animal by viewing its physical adaptations. We learnt about why the animal’s skeletons and internal structures are shaped the way they are. For example, a carnivorous animal’s teeth would be shaped like a dagger therefore ripping their prey apart, whereas a herbivorous animal’s teeth would be flat to chew plants and roots.

"I have never been to a zoo before and I loved my experience with all the friendly animals!" Silvy D

Next we exited the education workshop and entered the interactive lemur enclosure. It gave us an idea about what living in a habitat with lemurs would feel like. We continued looking for unique animals after leaving the lemurs. Did you know that Lemurs can live up to 20 years age?

"I enjoyed looking at the orang-utans because it smiled at me and all my friends 😄." Rosalind P

After visiting many animals such as: gorillas, elephants, otters, and more, we visited

the butterfly house. It was amazing to experience the way all of the butterflies hovered around us. It was extremely humid because it mimicked the butterflies natural habitat. Eventually we got to the seals, and the aquatic mammals enclosure. We saw several types of fish, seals, penguins and crustaceans. The seals swam around so majestically through the water.

"The butterfly house was also amazing! 7 butterflies went on me , and I really liked it! :)" Michelle K

Upon leaving, we were told to care for the environment, and protect the Earth. We would like to spread this message to you. Please help us in protecting our planet as much as you think you can. Thanks for reading!
