St Mary’s Parish Prayer
God our Father, as we thank you for the blessings, we ask you to bless this Parish of yours, so that we may love you more.
Encircle our families with your loving care.
Help parents to be good examples to their
children and our youth to grow in strength as good Christians.
To the sick grant health, to the aged bring serenity and to those in sorrow, joy.
May we grow stronger in faith and may
our love for one another become deeper
in our daily living.
We make this through the intercession of our Mother Mary. Amen

NEW - Prayer for those in Need
Dear God,
As we gather for prayer today, may we bring to mind our neighbours in NSW and Queensland who have been ravaged by this 100 year flood event.
Help us to walk beside those in need who are carrying heavy burdens by providing clothing, food and shelter. In their despair grant them strength so they may find peace and comfort in your love.
AMEN
NEW - Looking at The Readings
As with Mark’s Gospel, the account of the Lord’s Passion is the shortest of those of the four evangelists. I am somewhat thankful for this. My first day at Catholic University America I had to sit a two hour Latin test which comprised of translating St Jerome’s Latin into English of Mark’s Passion. It is simple Latin but more fortunately I had read it three times on Palm Sunday earlier in that year. The language is simple but its implications are deep. The secrets within his earlier mission are revealed. He is publicly acclaimed the Son of God. He is seen as the Master giving instructions. The Old is replaced by the New with the tearing of the veil in the temple: we now have a new temple, the body of Christ.
The paucity of words of Jesus from his arrest to his death are significant also in revealing his messianic secret. He speaks only three times: to the high priest’s question he answer “I am [the Messiah] the son of Man” to Pilate’s question are you King of the Jews, “Yes” and finally “Eloi, Eloi lama sabachthani”, the words of the suffering servant, Psalm 22:1 is also an ancient reference to the Messiah.
New - Liturgical Jottings - Passion (Palm) Sunday
This Sunday seems to have two titles. Passion Sunday because this is the day the entire Passion of the Lord is proclaimed as the Gospel. Palm Sunday because this day the palms and olives branches are blessed and distributed recalling the event of the people receiving Christ into Jerusalem. This was the very first Palm Sunday Procession or March.
We begin Holy Week. Two Gospels are read; one at the beginning of the Mass and the other in the Liturgy of the Word, They relate the events for the whole week. But no one-day is able to celebrate the entire mystery of the Last Supper, Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord. We take eight days.
NEW - A Passion Sunday Prayer
With the tearing of the veil
on account of Adam's debts,
tear my ingrained meanness,
destroy the bond of my life's sins.
I believe with all my soul
and adore you, O only Son,
forgive me the faults I committed;
may my past sins not be remembered.
A prayer by Nerses Snorhali
NEW - On the Lighter Side
When our son was around five, on Palm Sunday we did the normal parental questioning, “So, what did you learn today at Mass?” He was carrying a small branch home, so we expected to hear about Jesus riding on a donkey and people waving palm branches. Instead, our son said, “I learned not to poke anyone in the eye.”
New - Quotable Quote
God speaks in the silence of the heart, and we listen. And then we speak to God from the fullness of our heart, and God listens. And this listening and this speaking is what prayer is meant to be.
St Teresa of Calcutta
New - Palm Sunday
On Palm Sunday we remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus accepts death on a cross rather than engaging in violence. The contrast between the Prince of Peace and the powers and dominions of his day could not be starker. This is the basis of the Palm Sunday tradition of protest in favor of peace and non-violent alternatives for addressing social, ecological and economic and political issues.
Reflection
Jesus is known by many names, including Prince-of-Peace (Isaiah 9:6). As Isaiah goes on to say “He will reign on David’s throne and over all his kingdom; he will establish and uphold it with justice and righteousness” (Is 9:7). Jesus is a peacemaker: he shows us how to live in right relationship with ourselves, with each other, with God, and with the whole of God’s creation.
The Reign or Dominion of God is not just a future event for which we simply wait. It is already present and active among us. God invites us to participate in its unfolding until, in the fullness of time, God brings it to completion. We don’t just wish for a peaceful world, peaceful communities and peaceful families – we are called to live in a way that brings these things into being. It is a way of making the kingdom of justice, love and peace announced by the Prince of Peace manifest in the world.
