Communication Team News

School Camp

The 5-6s had a wonderful camp and it was so much fun. Here is a snippet from the communication team about Canberra 2021.

Electoral Commission

While in Canberra, the Grade 5-6s visited the Australian Electoral Commission which is where they make all of the elections fair. We went there to learn about how to vote and how democracy and federation began. We mocked a vote using the preferential voting system which means that the election winner has to get more than half of the votes. I asked some other members of the communication team what their favourite parts of the electoral commission and most people said that they loved the video with the holograms of the famous people that made voting happen for everyone in Australia.

The AIS

The AIS is a big sports stadium that people go to train in if they are an elite sportsperson. The 5-6s got to go to the AIS and we got to go on the technology sports equipment and everyone had so much fun. The equipment that was there was a basketball court, skeleton skiing, wheelchair racing, bike riding and canoe racing.

Questacon

Questacon is a national technology and science centre containing many fun and educational galleries. One of the galleries was themed by Mars, with an inflated planet Mars hanging from the ceiling. In another gallery there was an Earthquake lab, where you could experience what it would feel like to be in an earthquake. In that same gallery there was caged lightning that would strike every 15 minutes! Another one of the galleries had a game that tested your eye coordination speed, where you would hit the button that lit up hitting as many buttons as you can in 30 seconds.

Canberra camp was wonderful. Thanks to teachers for organising it.

Zooper Dooper Day

Last Friday we had a Zooper Dooper Day, the excitement of the day was crazy! The whole school ran once the bell sounded to que up for a zooper dooper at lunch time. We sold Zooper Doopers for 50 cents each. Zooper Doopers are a great way to raise money for Caritas Australia. It is certainly very good to raise money for such a good cause. In the end the school ended up raising $170 in just half an hour. Well done St Mary’s!
