Basketball State Final

The Year 9/10 Basketball team headed to Launceston on 26/27 November for the BTAS State High School Championship.  The team had some exciting nail-biting contests, and really enjoyed the competition against the best basketball schools in the State.

Finishing 2rd in the regional competition meant their first game on Saturday was against Marist Regional College, the 1st placed team from the North West region.  The result was 43-47 loss.  In another tough encounter they then faced Riverside High, the 1st placed North team, and were defeated 51-43.  In the final match of the day, they enjoyed a fantastic win 67-30 against Launceston Church Grammar School, who were the 3rd placed North team.  The day’s results had them in 3rd place in their pool, and the cross over final was another win, against Sacred Heart College 36-20.

The team included Coco Erin, Millie Baric, Erin Ayers, Claire Murray, Isla Gerathy, Gabriella Rasmussen and Molly Green.  Top scorers for the tournament were Claire Murray and Coco Erin.

Thanks to Danyon Saville, who gave up his time to coach the team again, and Margaret Pergar for managing the team so well.  Thank you also to all the families for supporting their daughters to attend the tournament, and assisting with bench duty.

Secondary Touch Football Finals

The finals round of secondary touch football games were played last week for all teams, based on final ladder positions.  8 Navy secured a place in the Grand Final, but found the going tough against the experienced Clarence High team.  Whilst the final result was a 7-2 loss, the team played with great spirit and should be proud of their efforts.

It was closer match for the 7 Navy, who were defeated in the 3 v 4 Final by St Mary’s Blue 2-1, in a very tight contest. In the 5 v 6 play off, it was a case of what could have been for 8 Gold, as they took a small lead into the half time break against Collegiate Swans.  Unfortunately, their opponents came out stronger and eventually took the win 6-4. It was great to see 7 Gold secure a strong win 8-4 in their 9 v 10 match against Sacred Heart.  This team has been building over recent weeks, so it was a fitting end to an enjoyable roster.

Thanks to coaches Macy Bresnehan, Mahummad Khan and Mr Damien Lowe for their support each Monday.

Primary Touch Football

It’s been a great learning experience for our group of touch footballers, participating in the Year 5/6 JSSATIS roster on Wednesday afternoons. Most of the team were Year 5s and hadn’t played touch football before, so it wasn’t easy coming up against many more experienced and older teams, and one that even included boys. Their attitude was fantastic all the way through, as they were keen to train and learn, and put what they learned into practice. Coach, Bec O’Halloran, was wonderful supporting the team and helping them to understand the less instinctive aspects of the game. Well done to the team of Eliza Fleming, Alex Varveris, Lavinia Ciccia, Sophie Haremza, Arsh Dahiwal, Lillian Hill and Arwen Lazarus.

Year 7/8 Australian Rules Football

The Year 7/8 SSATIS Football roster has also drawn to a close, with a finals round for all teams, due to the weather cancellation in Round 1. It was wonderful that 31 students from Year 7 and 8 participated in football this term. It was evident how the game has continued to develop for females, with the skills and knowledge of the players in this competition improving each year. The level of experience within the teams was varied, but you could see the confidence growing in new players, and the trust and teamwork building amongst the players.

The Year 8 team played off in the 3 v 4 final and put on a dominate display against St Mary’s Green to win 74-36, and finish 3rd.

Mount Carmel 7s played Mount Carmel 8s in the second last match of the season at Sandown Park on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The match was one sided, given the age, size and experience of the Year 8s, but the match was played in great spirit. The second half, saw Mr Chapman take to the field to assist the Year 7s, and with that the Year 7s lifted. The attacked the ball more ferociously, laid tackles, kicked long, and even scored.  The Year 8s didn’t hold back either, and were very excited when they were able to lay a tackle on Mr Chaman and win a holding the ball free kick. Hopefully everyone will be back for more football next season.

Thanks to Mr Chapman, Celeste Knowles and Sarah Gray for coaching and managing teams.

Year 5/6 Cricket

The JSSATIS Girls cricket roster has been running on a Monday afternoon at the Domain this term, and like many of our sports this term, have been affected by the wet weather and less than perfect conditions.  Well done to the team that included Olive Hall (Year 3), Lavinia Ciccia, Charlie Seeber-Peattie, Piper Orr, Eliza Fleming (Year 5) and Hilary Stevens, Abbie Duffey and Meg Tilyard (Year 6).  Special thanks to Kurt Stevens for coaching and umpiring.

“The girls showed great improvement in a very shortened roster and most importantly had a lot of fun. We all know cricket can be a true mental test when not assisted by the elements (rain, hail & shine) but the team showed resilience and player in the true spirit of the game.”

Kurt Stevens, Coach
