Careers

In addition to providing advice about all things related to pathways and potential careers, Ms O'Brien and Ms Shelley also look for opportunities to engage students in events that may broaden their awareness and understanding of what options are out there. Two such events have occurred recently.

Year 10 RMIT Excursion

Trent Patience, with the support of Ms O'Brien, organised an excursion to RMIT for interested Year 10 students. This group were fortunate enough to visit RMIT to learn more about tertiary opportunities at this institution. Following a presentation from staff, students went on a tour and learnt more about the facilities and programs on offer. In particular they visited the $10 million film and media facility and were given a demonstration showing them how live television works.

This was a brilliant day of learning for the students and roughly one quarter of the attendees said the event had changed their ideas about what they intended to do as a future career. All agreed that the excursion was valuable and gave them a better insight into what life in a tertiary institution looks like.

RMIT staff acknowledged the behaviour and respect shown by HHS students and they have welcomed us back for further excursions in 2023.

Year 7 and 8 Women in Trades event

On Wednesday 30th November, Year 7 and 8 girls participated in a Women in Trades event

Students participated in three sessions over the course of the morning. A skill and teamwork building session challenged students to construct the tallest possible tower, using only spaghetti, tape and a single marshmallow. Despite some instability issues, all groups did a fantastic job, working together and problem solving as they went.

The second workshop session, run by Reece Plumbing, gave students the chance to use the tools and materials used in plumbing. The ‘Healesville High School’ letters they created from the plumbing materials looks fantastic.

The final workshop allowed students to try their hand at welding and learn about the safety equipment required.

A big thank you to Empowered Women in Trades for running this event and giving students the chance to learn a little about possible trade pathways. Women currently make up 3% of all people working in the various trades and this organisation is hoping to encourage women to see trades as a viable career path.
