Secondary School News

From the Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, Nick Jones

A warm welcome back to students and families for the beginning of Term 3. I trust you enjoyed some quality family time together during the break.

At our Secondary Assembly on Wednesday I spoke to students about the importance of Term 3. One of my great passions is the sport of AFL (Freo Heave Ho!). The third quarter in a football match is known as ‘the premiership quarter’. This is the time of the game when good players and teams put their foot down and surge past the opposition who may be starting to tire. This is a time, when, despite the feeling of fatigue, injury or self-doubt, good players understand the need to display a high level of grit, resilience and determination to push through. I have challenged our students to demonstrate these same character strengths as they work hard during this term to improve on Semester 1 results and to achieve the goals they set themselves for the year.

Term 3 is not just about hard work. As a school community we look forward to many whole school and House events. These are opportunities for students to step outside their comfort zone and challenge themselves in the areas of athletics, music, singing and expedition. I look forward to the contributions of our students in these co-curricular activities this term.

As part of a professional learning session I held with secondary teachers this week, I asked staff what they appreciated and admired about John Wollaston students. The list presented was extensive, however some of the qualities included:

  • Trustworthy
  • Fair
  • Responsible
  • Empathetic
  • Compassionate
  • Inclusive
  • A keen sense of humour
  • Grounded
  • Grateful

These are wonderful qualities which will ensure our students go on to be successful and proactive citizens. We are proud of the personal qualities that our students exhibit every day and we thank them for the contribution they make to our positive school culture.

All the best.
