Cross Country

Over the last few weeks we have had many students represent Mornington Secondary College in Cross Country Events.

On 23rd May MSC had 95 students competing at the Southern Metro Division Championships at Hastings Foreshore. The weather conditions were perfect for racing. All students represented the college with pride with some fantastic results across all age groups. We walked away for the 6th year in a row with the SPD title, winning 5 out of 6 aggregates. The highlight of the day was from Georgia Hyams who was knocked down and trampled at the starting line in her race. Battered and bruised Georgia returned later in the day and asked to ran again – however she had to run up in and older age group, she held her own the entire race, running 4th overall and was also awarded with an invite through to the SMR Championships in her usual age group. Well done Georgia.

On Saturday 15th June we had Joel Bell, Ollie Pratt and Archie Hewett competed at the Athletics Victoria State Championships at Bundoora. This competition is the best of the best in Victoria, all our athletes were bottom age athletes, meaning they are the youngest running in their competition. The boys represented MSC with pride. Joel 7th, Ollie 12th in U15 (as 14 year olds) and the highlight of the day Archie Hewett coming 2nd in U14 (running as a 12-13 year old).

Finally, on Monday 17th June those runners who succeeded at Division headed to the amazing Cruden Farm in Langwarrin to compete at the SMR championships. A team of 65 athletes in total represented MSC and again the weather was perfect. A new course for all students with Cruden Farm debuting its first ever Secondary School Cross Country meet. Cruden farm produced undulating terrain, grassy hills, mud and of course plenty of cow patties. The student tackled the challenging terrain with amazing effort. 14 students will now be traveling to Bundoora on 18th July (Term 3) for the State Championships. These students are Max Urwin, Kiralee Turver, Summer Shepherd, Noah Rogers, Oliver Pratt, Ellie Jenkins- Perry, Rome Hodson, Archer Hewett, Taj Davies, Nathan Corbett, Mitch Brander and Joel Bell.

Well done to all runners for their efforts this Cross Country season, looking forward to next year. Just a reminder that Athletics training is held every Monday and Wednesday 7:30am – 8:30am, meeting at the stadium.

Year 7 Sport

Many year 7 students represented our college for the first time in the sporting field in the Southern Peninsula Division Championships and did a fantastic job, we hope you can continue this involvement and continue to compete strongly for our college.

The girls netball team played out at Mornington Netball Courts with our A team managing to finish in second position, whilst our team B progressed through to the SMR Finals after winning their comp.

At Dallas Brooks, both our boys and girls soccer teams played many hard-fought games. With our girls finishing in second place and our boys taking the championship and advancing through to the SMR Finals.

At home, our Boys Badminton team hosted our other schools on the Mornington Peninsula, and put all their fantastic practice to good work, by finishing in first position and making their way through to the SMR Finals.

Finally, out at Emil Madsen, our A and B boys football teams played 4 matches each. Our B team managed to finish in 3rd position after wins against Mt Eliza and Rosebud. Whilst our A team were dominant, amassing 303 points in their 4 games and only having 14 points scored against them for the day. They too were crowned the division champions and advance through to the SMR Finals in Term 3.

AFL Premier League

Recently our Senior Boys competed in the AFL Premier League Competition. This competition is the number 1 public school competition in Australia and features the top 8 schools in the state. The winner of the competition, is given the opportunity to play on the MCG against the top private school in the state.

We were placed with three other school is the Metropolitan Pool which also featured Hallam Secondary College, SEDA and Essendon Keilor College. After a strong showing in the pool games, including two wins against SEDA and Hallam and a one-point loss to Essendon, our boys made their way through to the state semi-final in Bendigo against Catherine McAuley College. The boys put up a good fight but couldn’t match the team from Bendigo. Is was still an amazing achievement by the team and to be placed third in the state is something that they should be immensely proud of.

The AFL Premier League team will play again next year, and is open to students from Years 10-12.

This term, I had the pleasure of taking part of the Aerobics Squad down to Geelong for the State Champs after qualifying from the Regional Finals back in April.

We had an extremely successful day to say the least!

One of our Junior teams put on their best every performance, coming 5th in their section of 10 which was an amazing result!

Jasmine Tostovrsnik of Year 12 came 2nd in her solo and her duo, receiving an invitation to Nationals on the Gold Coast in August for both performances.

Poppy Howarth came 3rd in her solo and also received an invitation to Nationals.

The Senior team ended up being the only ones in their section due to teams pulling out at the last minute so they backed up their 1st place from Regionals with another 1st and an invite to Nationals.

But the big story of the day was our other Junior team who came 1st in their section, blowing the other teams out of the water with their score which was 12 points ahead of second place! (Usually the placing teams’ scores are split by less than a point!) As a result of this huge score, our girls were the ONLY team that were invited to Nationals from their section (when normally they would take 3-5!).

To say that I am a proud coach, of all of the girls, is a huge understatement.
