Positive Self-Talk
The messages we tell ourselves when we are struggling are very important. More importantly, we are not always aware of them because they are done subconsciously. As we have learned, it is important to acknowledge what scholars tell themselves during times they are being challenged. The messages they tell themselves can come from a number of places, what they hear at home from their parents, siblings, family members, and us their educators. We can give our students the tools they need to successfully reframe their negative thinking into something positive. Notice the difference in, “I can’t do this!!” compared to, “I’m having a tough time but I will keep on trying because I know I can do it!!
The words we use have a huge impact on our scholars, their self-esteem and their outlook on their education.
A good topic during a community circle can be: "Let's convert these statements into more positive ones."
