Lightening the Load: Dr Justin Coulson

In a recent webinar Dr Justin Coulson, an Australian parenting specialist, shared four secrets to make it through the COVID-19 lockdown.

  1. Listen to your children: They need to be heard. Give your children permission to be heard. Be present with your child. Give them time to share their concerns. Help them name their emotions and acknowledge that this is a hard time. Ask them how you can help them.
  2.  Laugh with your children: Find opportunities to laugh and be funny with your children. They need more fun and laughter at the moment.
  3. Encourage your child to give: They need to help others. Wellbeing and feeling good often comes from helping others. Explore ways together that they can give to others.
  4. Be hope Builders: Children need to have hope. Give children something to look forward, in the short term and also when lockdown finishes.

Dr Coulson encourages parents to find a ray of light for their families, to be leaders and to give hope to our children.
