News from 5/6 Unit

Hello Families,

Welcome back for Term 2. We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable break.

In Reading, we begin a new mentor text, See you in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng. Using this text as a guide, we will continue to gain deeper understanding through the application of comprehension strategies. Students will analyse by applying skills including questioning, summarising and clarifying.

In Writing, we will begin a persuasive writing unit. Students will review the structure and language of exposition texts. Then construct their own text, developing arguments with emotive phrases to persuade an audience.

In Numeracy, we will begin a new fractions unit. Students will participate in a range of hands-on learning tasks, encouraging them to apply skills and solve problems involving fractions.  They will then apply these skills to solve more complex problems involving fractions and the 4 operations.

Additionally to this, an essential part of success in numeracy is being confident with times tables. Students should be practising these skills each night, with the goal for all sets (2-10) to be recalled with automaticity.

We continue to prepare the students for NAPLAN. The four tests will take place between 10- 20 May, week 3 of Term 2. Students will need headphones to assist them in completing the tests.

Term 2 is a busy time from an Interschool Sport perspective too. On Friday, April 29th, a group of students will represent MPS at the AFL Girls Gala Day. Please check with your child and be on the lookout for this event on your compass account. Interschool Sport will begin on Friday of Week 2. If you would like to help out on Fridays, please contact your child’s teacher.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Kind Regards,

Pippa Davis and Nathan Baxter

What’s Happening in 3/4?

How quickly we have all settled back into the routines of learning in the 3/4 unit. We were so excited to see all of the smiling faces back on Tuesday and hear about the fantastic holidays that all of the students had.

This week in numeracy we are starting our learning about Multiplication - understanding that multiplication refers to calculating groups of items and developing strategies that are more efficient than 'repeated addition.' As the weeks go on, the students will complete formal vertical equations - in both expanded and refined formats - as well as representing equations using arrays.

In literacy, our focus remains of developing reading fluency - which focuses on not just accuracy of reading, but also the phrasing, tonality and inflections. We are exploring the persuasive writing genre and students are quickly learning the differences between facts and opinions (for those of you playing at home, that was a fact.), and how these can be used to persuade someone to a particular point of view.

Have a fantastic week!

The Adventures of the 1/2's

Hello Families,

Welcome back to Term 2, we hope your break was relaxing and happy.

Our wonderful 1/2 students have returned to school ready to learn, and have settled back into school routines quickly. It has been lovely to see all of our students reconnect with their peers during recess and lunchtimes, using several strategies from our Friendology program.

In Literacy, we are beginning our full phonics program, seeing students focus on the sounds of grapheme, digraphs and trigraphs through our Heggerty Program and Letters and Sounds Curriculum. Within Reading we will focus on decoding and  fluency; we ask that when reading with your child each day you encourage these skills. Our focus in Writing will be narratives, we will be exploring narratives within Reading through well chosen books that also link to our inquiry unit of ‘Why is my place special?’.

During Writing we will begin our narrative unit by learning the parts of a narrative text and creating ideas and building up to writing our own narratives. We will have a focus on sentence structure and the different types of words in a sentence, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.

In  Numeracy we are continuing to consolidate our skills around skip counting and Place Value. Moving forward for Term 2, the focus for students  will be on addition and subtraction.  After which our students will begin to study aspects of Probability and the likelihood of an event happening.

Our Inquiry unit, will see our students exploring their local community, country and wider world and learning how we have special places that we belong to. As part of this we have sent home a link through compass for a survey to see what connections your child has to places. The link is  https://forms.gle/AgJ2rwvWZYrLWPSq7 . Please fill this in with your child as we will discuss the results in class over the coming weeks.

Kind Regards,

The ½ Teaching Team

School Contributions for 2022

Using the forms sent home last month you can choose to pay by Credit Card at the office, BPay (details on the form) or Direct into the bank account.  If you pay via BPay or Direct into bank please return the forms (both pages please showing all contributions that you may choose to pay) to the office or scan and email to marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au so we are able to reconcile your payment.  You can also pay via Compass.  You can find this in the Payment Centre on the home page.

Please note that you may see in the payment section at the bottom of the page that you have an unallocated funds credit.  This may be because you had a credit from a cancelled excursion or something similar.  If you would like to use this credit, then you need to process this first by removing the amounts prepopulated in the Curriculum Contributions box and just adding the amount of the credit and then clicking on the process button.  The curriculum contributions will then show the amount less the credit applied, and you can continue with your payment.  If you wish to donate the credit amount, then an alternative option is to process your payment first and then add the credit amount to one of the donation areas and processing this. If you require any assistance, please contact the office 9870 3468 or email marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au
