Athletics carnival
Our school Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday 7 June (Week 7, Term 2) at Myimbarr Athletics Centre, Flinders. This will be a K-6 event where students can participate in all events. Students will travel to the field by bus and will need to arrive at school by 8:30am. Parents are welcome to attend this carnival following Covid guidelines. There will be a canteen available - if you could like to place an order for a hot lunch, please pre-order and pay prior to the carnival.
In preparation for our Athletics Carnival we will be practicing our skills in whole school sport rotations on Fridays. This gives our students the opportunity to learn the skills of each event. We encourage our students to practice these newly learnt skills at home, whether this is holding mini Olympic races in the freshly mowed grass (as race tracks), practicing how far they can jump in the soft beach sand or using a small toy to practice their shot put skills outside on the grass. This practice familiarises our students with the events of the day and can help with nerves, especially for our young ones - as it might be their first Athletics Carnival. Good luck everyone and have fun practicing!
Orienteering
This term Years 3-6 are participating in orienteering as a school sport. Orienteering is an excellent sport option for young children as it helps grow physical literacy skills, build valuable social skills and strengthen cognitive ability. It also includes valuable map reading skills, and helps students to develop positive teamwork and participate in fun and engaging practical activities in the outside environment. Four classes (2/3 Warthogs, 3/4 Koalas, 4/5 Meerkats and 6 Chameleons) will be involved in this 4-week program - working closely with a certified coach to strengthen their skills and learn valuable techniques that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives. I cannot wait to see what our students can achieve!
School Knockout competitions:
This year Windang Public School has been participating in some knockout competitions between other schools. We have had so much fun competing with every team, demonstrating extraordinary teamwork and determination in each game.
On Friday 20 May, twelve students represented our school at the 2022 Boys NSWPSSA Touch Knockout South Coast game versing Balarang PS. Each student showed enthusiasm, excellent teamwork - with positive encouragement on the sidelines as well as grit and determination to score a try. It was so lovely to see how the team were encouraging each other to try their best and have a go, especially because most of the team had not played touch before. Well done boys - we are all so incredibly proud of you.
On Friday 27 May, seven students traveled to Shellharbour PS to take part in the NSWPSSA South Coast Netball Knockout Competition versing the Shellharbour team. The girls showed great determination and teamwork especially since 90% of the team had never played a game of netball before! It was truly wonderful to see how they worked together as a team, encouraged each other and tried their best. Well done girls - we are all so proud of you.
A special thank you to the Lake Illawarra High School students. They helped our students to build confidence by training with them, teaching them important rules and teaching them the tricks and tips of both touch and netball.
Best You Can Be - Illawarra Dragons Program
On Monday 23 May, Years 3-6 were lucky enough to take part in the Best You Can Be 2022 Illawarra Dragons Program. Students learnt about social inclusion and diversity, and were involved in lots of fun games!
Great work everyone! Keep it up!
