Grades 4-6

We are back!

It's great to be back into the swing of things at Newlands! Students are excited about being back with their friends and the activities that we have planned for this term, including Cross Country, Interschool sports, Inquiry... and the list goes on!

Students have been working hard during literacy by using interesting words when writing, finding key ideas to summarise a text, organising their thoughts in graphic organisers and understanding the way in which compound sentences add more detail to our writing.

During maths, students have been collaborating during Maths Builders in 6 activity rotations- learning to solve multi-step problems, identify the different angles in everyday objects, consolidating efficient strategies for addition, locating decimal numbers in a number line, identify length, area and perimeter. Busy times!

Week 1’s Inquiry went off with a bang in the 4/5/6 area!  Students, through units of learning entitled ‘The Flash’ and ‘Transformers’, began exploring the Physical Science concepts of light, energy, electricity, and cause & effect.   We had fun exploring these concepts and making connections through Builder-style activities that involved alligator wires; batteries; mini motors, lights; balloons; magnets; torches; boxes and electricity circuit kits.

Interschool Sport

This term, the students are playing Aussie Rules, Netball and Soccer. The three teams will participate in three days of sport with St Fidelis, Pascoe Vale and St Bernard's.

Here is a timetable of the events and location. Grade 5 students will be missing out on Friday 13th due to NAPLAN.

Cross Country and Lunchtime Clubs

Today, all the students participated in the annual Cross Country race at Jackson Reserve. A day full of games, competition, support, challenges and lots of fun!  Some students will make it into District and Raul will be sending more information about that in the following weeks.

Clubs are back at Newlands and students from 4/6 are encouraged to participate in any of them. This term we have a gardening club, chess club, soccer and choir.

Naplan 2022

During week three our Grade 5 students will be completing their NAPLAN test. Students have been advised to bring their devices fully charged, the charger in their bags and a set of headphones. We have spent time practicing and getting used to the length of the test and the different strategies when finding the correct answer,  this has increased students' confidence and stamina.
