Principal's News

Dear Families,

Well, this week was certainly the week of incursions, We started off the week with a 3/4 incursion on democracy. The incursion received glowing reports from both the teachers and the students, who stated they learnt a lot and had fun in the process. Tuesday we welcomed Bunnings Warehouse who did an incursion with our Year 5 and 6 students. They did some work on our ‘Secret Garden’ and I must say it’s looking fantastic, thank you to Bunnings who provided us with some plants, trees, hi-vis vests and aprons. On Wednesday we had our final incursion with “Values for Life’ coming back to do on incursion on ‘Great Mates’ This concluded the NDA (National Day of Action) against bullying events.

It really has been a week of getting stuck in and cleaning up and I would like to thank Bianca Kopp, Melanie Lachal and Navina Joseph who have sorted and moved all the second-hand uniform; it was a massive job and they certainly tackled it with gusto, I even have a few new things to put into the birthday box.

Mrs Davies, Mr Cleary and all the students have been preparing for our school ‘Athletics Carnival’ which will be held at Duncan McKinnon Reserve this coming Thursday. Parents are welcome to attend and I know Mrs Davies is looking for parent helpers, if anyone is able to assist for the day please let Mrs Davies know and email her mahla.davies@sjmalvern.catholic.edu.au

I hope you all have a wonderful and safe weekend.

                                               Democracy, Community and Me Incursion

On Monday, 4D explored the fundamentals of democracy and government in Australia. We examined the difference between rules and laws and how they are made to benefit the community. We stood for mock-election to the local government while learning about preferential voting and absolute majorities, participated in a local government council meeting role play, with costumes and props, to illustrate how local rules and laws are made for the community as well as took the role of Councillors and residents to contribute their opinions to the debate and to got to grips with the democratic process.

Three takeaways from today are: - Lenny

1. I learnt preferential voting with all my classmates.

2. I learnt that you have to be over 18 years old to vote and if you don’t vote when your    over 18 you get a fine.

3. I learnt that not all countries use the democracy voting system.

I had so much fun learning the voting system.

I had so much fun on that incursion.
