Teaching and Learning Focus: Fluency

This term teachers have been focusing on maths fluency tasks, following a research project and professional development in 2021.

At the beginning of each lesson, students are presented with a daily review that is worked through independently. The focus for this is to review topics learnt over previous weeks. With consistent exposure to topics over a period of time, students will retain information in a long term capacity and become more fluent in these areas.

“Fluency describes students developing skills in choosing appropriate procedures, carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently and appropriately, and recalling factual knowledge and concepts readily. Students are fluent when they:

  • make reasonable estimates
  • calculate answers efficiently
  • recognise robust ways of answering questions
  • choose appropriate methods and approximations
  • recall definitions and regularly use facts,
  • can manipulate expressions and equations to find solutions.”
