Around the Traps - Foundation/1

Literacy

In Foundation this week we have introduced the sounds /d/ /f/ /v/ /e/ and have practised building and reading words using these new sounds.

In Grade 1 we have continued to look at the many different ways to represent the /ay/ sound in words - ai as in train, ay as in play, ea as in great and a-e as in snake.

As our Inquiry Topic, Growing Older and Wiser, comes to an end, we have been reading the book ‘Night Noises’ by Mem Fox. This book has let us explore the family, interests and life of a lady who has grown old. Students have enjoyed doing many different writing activities associated with this story, including brainstorming alternative endings to the story, writing about the noises we hear during the night, writing about the setting of the story and thinking about the main character - Lillie Laceby.

Here are some examples of how students thought the story would end:

I think Lillie Laceby opens the door and forgot that the Coles delivery came today. She sees zombie’s behind the Coles man and runs to her bed. - Catalina

I think Lillie Laceby saw a robber and he quickly stole every bit of her jewellery. So she played music and he didn’t like the music and accidentally left the jewellery there. - Ottilie

I think Lillie Laceby opened the door and saw fairies surrounding her and she thought they were robbers so she called the police. - Frankie

I think Pikachu is behind the door. - Oscar C

I think there are four giant redback spiders behind the door. - Freddie

I think there is a bunch of bees behind the door. - Leo P

Maths

Foundation

This week in Foundation we have continued learning and practising our counting strategies. We are experts at the ‘counting out loud’ strategy and have been working hard to perfect the ‘touch and count’, ‘move and count’ and ‘line up and count’ strategies when we are counting from 0-20. Next week we will begin learning about measurement and will be using materials such as blocks and paddle pop sticks to measure length.

Grade One

Students have continued to learn about 2 digit numbers this week. Some have even ventured into using 3 digit numbers! We have continued to practise this in a range of fun hands-on ways.

Inquiry

Next week we will be asking some of the Grade 6’s what it is like to feel old, so this week we have been hard at work practising being reporters! We have revised the questions we brainstormed as a class, and have used the iPad to film each other asking these questions. We will continue to practice our reporting skills this week before we interview our Grade 6 friends next week.

RE (Religion)

We are beginning to learn about Holy Week in F/1. We have begun by learning about The Last Supper and students had some great wonderings about this. We have been doing some crafts as well in preparation for our Easter reflections.
