Grape Harvest

I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the amazing 75 staff and students who turned up early yesterday morning to help with the 2022 Grape Harvest. This year, because of the long, wet winter the vine growth was delayed and slow at first and this resulted in our harvest being three weeks later than in the last two years. (3 March 2021 and 4 March 2020). However, as the vines mature, it is now seven years since the school planted the vineyard, they produce greater yields. Last year we pruned the vines slightly differently to allow for this development. As a result, we picked 1450kg (last year we picked 1050kg) and so we should produce just over 1000 bottles of the Grammar grown 2022 vintage. This record yield was also harvested in record time, with the last bucket emptied just after 8.00am. This progress allows for some options in the future with even greater educational values and experiences for students related to this important Western Australian industry.

Thank you to Chef Nick Harvey, Dr Paul Mitrovski and Hamish Medway (Year Eleven) for cooking up a well-deserved breakfast for all the pickers and the Facilities team for all the preparation behind the scenes to enable this to happen. Most importantly, once again a huge thank you to the volunteers; I hope you all enjoyed a very different way to start a school day, it’s amazing how much can be done before the first school bell.

It is now over to the Visual Art Department to design the label and other learning areas to complete this unique cross-curricular project.
