Assembly Presentations
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around the country each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week at the Fairview and Cumberland Assemblies, a beautiful poem by Alison Overeem was read by Mrs Crisara and the picture book ‘Finding our Heart’ by Thomas Mayor was also shared. Both highlighed the importance of recognising the culture and contributions of the Indigenous people of Australia. The Year 5 students were lucky to be invited to the Yarning Circle at lunchtime where Ms Garlick, Ms Riddell and Mr Lawless shared stories and cooked ‘bush cooking’ for the students to enjoy. The students learnt about Indigenous bush food and spices. They enjoyed a campfire, some music, damper flavoured with Indigenous spices and of course the enlightening words of Ms Garlick.
During Assemblies, students, staff and families also got to enjoy the Remembrance Day service. It was a beautiful presentation created by Mrs Harsan, Mr Catoggio and Mr Forward. The service recognised those who lost their lives and served to fight for our country’s freedom, as well as the Unnamed Soldier.
Prep 2021 Transition
Miss Jackson, Mrs Gilbert, Mrs Radley, Miss Accurso, Mrs Crisara, Mr Forward, Mrs Mitchell, Miss Donohue and I had the pleasure of greeting new families and students to the College for 2021 last Saturday as they collected their ‘Prep Packs’ from the car park. The Prep Packs included important information regarding the transition to school and some school readiness activities for students. The Zoom transition meetings with Prep teachers and students begun this week. How exciting for the teachers to meet with small groups of new Preps and engage in some fun activities!
Prep News
Miss Gemma Jackson (AHOS)
We have had a fun few weeks of learning in Prep! Last week during Word Study, we focused on the word ‘hair’ and enjoyed a crazy hair day dress up. This week, we are learning the word ‘light’. For our language experience, we read the story ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’. The Preps then made a jam sandwich and a mustard sandwich to try. It is safe to say, many of us did not enjoy the mustard sandwich and understand why the seagulls didn’t either. On Friday, we celebrated ‘100 and Something Days of Prep’, to make up for the 100 days that occurred during Home Learning. There were many elderly people on site looking 100!
Year 1 and 2 News
Miss Hannah Petterson (AHOS)
Year 1 and Year 2 students have enjoyed preparing for the Fairview showcase with lots of fun and music involved. We have been busy in classrooms with lots of learning happening. Year 1 students have been looking at procedural writing, for example in recipes. We even got to make fairy bread in class. Yum, yum! Year 2 students have been looking at graphing and data. We made a human graph of how many pets we have at home. In Integrated Studies, we have been looking at the olden days and how people used to write with ink pens. We had a go with paint and skewers to give us an idea – very tricky!
Year 3 and 4 News
Mrs Anne Adams (AHOS)
These past few weeks have been filled with routine schoolwork and assessment. Some of these consisted of reading and presenting speeches. It is great to see students working hard to do their best in the classrooms. Of course, there is time to let off some steam, too!
Year 5 and 6 News
Mr Nigel Keegan (AHOS)
Our Year 5 and Year 6 students continue to work hard in a whole range of topic areas with some very impressive results. Below is a snapshot of this work. Keep up the fantastic effort and achievement, students!
Mr Tom Marks (Year 5 Homeroom Teacher)
This week Cumberland students are recognising NAIDOC week by taking part in discussions and activities to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. On Monday 9 November, Year 5 students were lucky enough to try some indigenous food such as damper in the Food Studies Centre at lunchtime. Students have also been discussing the meaning and purpose of an ‘acknowledgement of country’ as well as a ‘welcome to country’ by sharing thoughtful ideas around respect, inclusion and understanding. In some classes, students will continue to read an ‘acknowledgement of country’ each morning throughout NAIDOC week and regularly for the rest of term.
Year 5 Poems
THE HORSERIDER
By Celeste F - 5A
THERE ONCE WAS A HORSERIDER,
RIDING LIGHTNING FAST
ALL THE OTHERS WERE LONG BEHIND
BUT THEY ALL KNEW THE SPEED WOULDN’T EVERLAST!
AS THE THUNDERING OF HOOVES BECAME LOUDER,
THE HORSE RIDER COULDN’T LOOK BACK ON HIS SADDLE
HIS HORSE BUCKED HIM OFF
AS THE HORSE NEIGHED, “OH NO LONGER YOU STRADDLE.”
GNOME FROM ROME
By Rafael B - 5A
THERE ONCE WAS AN EXTRAVAGANT GNOME FROM ROME,
HE VERY MUCH LIKED TO STUDY SPELL TOMES,
ONE DAY HE GOT BOUGHT,
AND HE FELT LIKE NAUGHT,
THAT VERY UNLUCKY GNOME FROM ROME!

Parenting Expert Michael Grose
‘Sometimes a few timely words delivered with precision can have a magical impact on children. In this article, Parenting Ideas founder, Michael Grose, shows how a few well-chosen words supported by strong body language can calm kids and point them in the right direction. He shows how a mother calmly won cooperation from her very excited four-year-old daughter just minutes after an unexpected visit from a neighbour and her children.’
