From the Head

There have been so many moments over the past two weeks where, rather than pinching myself, I have stopped for a moment and consciously appreciated finally being here at Girton.

Over the coming years there will be plenty of time to reflect and comment on the weighty issues of education.  I would like to take this opportunity, in my first newsletter, to highlight the things you might take for granted, which strike the fresh eyes of a new Head as being exceptional.

On Wednesday 7th October the Year Twelves returned to school for one day, to undertake the formidable task of sitting their GAT examination – another adjustment for them as the world responds and compensates for the impact of COVID-19.  Whilst I am sure that they have been in communication with each other, I witnessed so many positives as they returned to the school grounds.  They arrived, appropriately distanced, in pairs or friendship groups – their camaraderie has endured throughout isolation, distance, and separation.  There was warmth and welcome in their interaction with each other – and myself.  Joy shone from behind their masks as they saw their teachers and support staff in the familiar surroundings of Girton.  The same atmosphere pervaded the gym as they reunited with their cohort. As hoped and invited, they eagerly took up the invitation to say hello, and I was overwhelmed by their reception.  I doubt I will ever forget their welcome applause.

Throughout the first two weeks of term, in the Junior School, I have also been met by eager faces, happy to be at school and confident to speak with me.  Welcomed by parents as well, at the gates and via email, I have been touched by the friendly spirit of Girton.  People often speak of school and community, but Girton Grammar exceeds anything I have previously experienced.  Our students are confident and proud to be a part of this school.  From different suburbs, towns and cultural backgrounds, Girton comes together in an educational amalgam, stronger and brighter for the mix.

Accessing Astra, I found myself stunned by the number of activities, specialist classes and groups in which each student participates and belongs.  Similarly, the list of co-curriculum activities on offer has impressed me – truly there is something for everyone at Girton.  I love the range of opportunities and admire the staff and their commitment to support and offer up such an exceptional offering.

If there could be more, it has been how I have now seen, first-hand, how Girton tackles a problem.  In a time of continuing restrictions there is a dogged determination, especially by the staff, to always find a way, to look at alternatives, to go above and beyond to meet expectations and to maintain traditions.

I thank everyone for a wonderful first fortnight as your Head. The experience has exceeded my high expectations.
