School Representative Council (SRC) Update

by Rebecca Stonehouse-Melke

During the Term 3 lockdown our students on the School Representative Council worked diligently in the background, meeting via Webex each fortnight to work on issues that were important to them. After the SRC meetings our representatives then arranged times to meet with the class they represented to canvas ideas to bring back to the SRC fortnightly meetings. I am extremely proud  of our SRC students and the dedication they exhibited  and the responsibility they demonstrated to the role.

This term has all been about actioning all the ideas discussed and voted upon in Term 3. The first idea which began as a seed in Term 1 was to develop posters to display in the school which informed students about bullying. Students in all class meetings were asked to put forward snappy slogans which could be used on the posters. There were over 30 ideas which came back from our 16 grades and SRC voted on the two top favourites. The final choices were: 'Be the change you want to see in the world' and 'Bullying Be Smart Don’t Start'. Have a look around the school to see the wonderful designs that members of the SRC created to promote these ideas.

The second idea was to revamp the seats around the Friendship Tree so that they look attractive for students to sit upon and highlight the reason and purpose for why we have the friendship tree. Lots of classes revisited the use of the Friendship tree during their class meetings guided by their SRC rep. At last Monday mornings assembly, the school captains launched the school’s Friendship Seat Art competition which had also been discussed during SRC class meetings.

SRC would like students from F-6 to create a design that would be appropriate to paint on the Friendship Tree seats. The designs are to be completed and given to Mrs Melke by Friday the 27th November. It is a short timeframe but we know students who are interested will be well underway creating their design. Mrs Mann will then be judging the designs and the most creative design will be chosen to be reproduced onto the Friendship seats. We would like, if time permits for our Year 6 students to have a chance to contribute to the painting of the final design on the seats.

Finally, SRC wanted to support the wellbeing of Syndal South students by hosting different activities at recess twice a week until the end of the year in the school grounds. On Tuesday Harshitha and Aiditi ran a mindfulness breathing exercise under the Friendship Tree and it was very well received with a lovely applause at the end for the girls. We felt very calm and relaxed after the experience. Today a chalk drawing session was held which was well attended and the kids creative talents came out. This is a great initiative which has come from the students’ ideas and really embodies the idea of how Syndal South encourages student voice within the school.

Well done to all our SRC members on your super efforts and I look forward to the recess activities that will be coming in the next few weeks.

Have a great week everyone.

Mrs Melke
